Favorite character that's not a main character.

What is your favorite character that is not a main character?

My favorite would have to be Gamling he doesnt have a big part in the books and he fights pretty well in TT and ROTK.

1420!

My favorite from the movie would have to be Madril, I just love his character..."FARAMIR!" "If you let them go your life would be forfeit."

From the books...I would say either Imrahil or Hama. It's amazing the type of character Imrahil is. Denethor was his brother-in-law, yet he encourages Aragorn to take the throne. Hama I just love since Tolkien shows him being an honored member in his death at Helm's Deep, as well as the way he stands up to Aragorn in the chapter "King of the Golden Hall."

Well, everyone knows the stereotype of not getting along with your in-laws....

Actually, Imrahil is one of my favourite minor characters, too. But if I had to pick one as my favourite, it would probably be Glorfindel. I just love the great Noldorin warrior showing up and giving the Nazgul what they deserve.

On a more humorous note, I'm rather attached to old Odo Proudfoot.

I've always like the parts about Imrahil and his knights, too. But I really liked Beregond. He was just cool.

I'm tempted to say Imrahil or Glorfinfel, but I think I'll probabily have to go with Beregond's son, his name is Bergil I think. *laughs at the irony* Ok now you're asking "how can he be my favourite character if I don't remember his name?". Well, I remember his character. He brought humour to a few situations without ruining the tension and was a superb companign for Pippin. I think he sort of showed how Pippin had grown since leaving The Shire. He also conveyed what I felt was the true spirit of most of the Gondorians: he was merry, but true at heart and wanted to help as much as he could. In a way I s'pose it reminded me of Merry's plight, he wanted to fight and was not allowed, this time because of his age though and not just his stature.

Difficult... Frodo is my absolute favorite character in LOTR. But he's the main character, so he doesn't count!!!

I am rather partial to Nob, myself! And Bob, of course...

Bombadil was one of my favorite minor characters, because he just seemed to have an extremely jovial spirit in the most dangerous of times. His intervention at the barrow and giving the hobbits their blades was very influential in the defeat of the which king in ROTK.

my other favorite minor character was Gildor, he and his band of elves were very helpful in getting the hobbits to crickhollow, without his intervention, I beleive that the blackriders may have overtaken them and retrieved the ring before leaving the Shire.

Beregond was cool as well! I always find myself fascinated with Grima because of the tragedy of his position, the explanation of which eludes at the moment.

But there's one character more than anyone else between these pages that I'd love to find out about: Goldberry. I can never make out what she really is, and where she comes from. But that's just a curiosity

I agree, I would love to find out more about Goldberry. She seems so magical. I also like the down-to-middle-earth character of Butterbur. Happy with the simple life.

I very much liked the charcter Firefoot as well (is that his name? The hasty young ent).

I agree, Goldberry was always an interesting character. I loved how Tom Bombadil had to work to get her to be his wife....it really keeps her away from that "maiden-in-distress" sort of theme.

Quickbeam . Firefoot is Eomer's horse, which still is a minor character.

So with that, I will nominate the fox as my favorite minor character.

Sorry to be boring but Imrahil and Glorfindel are long time favourites (but of course Glorfindel has a role in the Silmarillion, which if not exactly leading certainly is an important supporting role ..) .

To be slightly more original I have a lasting affection for Erestor (I RPGed him once..), and as I head towards the foothills of Old Bagdom, I have a growing fondness for Lobelia

Lobelia turns out to a marvel, doesn't she?

Oh, and yes...the fact that Tom had to work as hard as anyone to be with Goldberry is interesting enought to be favorite cahracter material. Remarkably, it's nearly the same story my grandparents had. Oh well...

Dain II Ironfoot. He is one of the most underated character in all of Tolkien's works. I wish he would've expanded on him a little more.

I dunno if Faramir would be considered a non-main character.

I quite love Bergil and Beregond. They both make me laugh out loud while I read.

I also seem to like Thingol, the elf King of Doriath.

Beregond was a Gondorian soldier who served under Denethor. He was the one who showed Pippin around Minas Tirith and had many conversations with him. It was also he who helped Pippin save Faramir from being burned alive. His son was Bergil, a little boy, I don't remember of what age.

My favorite minor character? I would say, aside from Imrahil and Beregond who are obvious choices and rank amongst my favorite minors, it would be Erkenbrand of Rohan as well as Elladan and Elrohir. I always liked Elrohir a little better for some reason, although I don't know why. I love Erkenbrand's heroic rescue during the battle of Helm's Deep, and the Sons of Elrond are awesome in their never ending fight against Sauron. I also love how they have a personal vendetta with the Dark Lord and his minions because of what they did to their mother. It's great too, speculating what their fates were after the destruction of the Ring.

I guess I'll have to be boring and go for Beregond, or Háma. As for others, I find Erkenbrand a lovely character (or maybe it's just the situation where he first appears in Helm's Deep...). Also Círdan the shipwright strikes me as awesome. And, for some reason, the messenger from Gondor who brings Théoden the red arrow. Does Bill the pony count?

Sure Bill counts! He was almost a talking character, and had he stayed in Rivendel much longer, he would have been!

I also like Ingold, the soldier stationed at the outpost of Minas Tirith who speaks to Gandalf and Pippin at their arrival- he plays a small part, but I like him. I neglected to put Háma before, but he is great as well. I think it's really cool that Tolkien gave him his own little funeral scene. It showed Háma's great valour.

Let's not forget the few women who are named as minor characters in LotR; my favourite is Ioreth! She may be talkative and seem silly to outsiders, but there is genuine wisdom in her words and a good sense for practical action. Besides, she is one of the characters Tolkien uses as comic relief - much preferable in my opinion to making his primary dwarf belch and get drunk! I think the passages in "The Houses of Healing" are hilarious, though I grant they are subtle (something PJ is not in his filmed version - which explains why he neglected to introduce such an admirable and humorous character!).

Besides, Ioreth plays a vital part in the validation of Aragorn's kingship and his acceptance by the people of the city. How else would they have heard of his healing exploits - from that learned but impractical (and unnamed!) herb-master?!

And I agree with Lal that the Gaffer is highly interesting - even if most of what we hear from him is only second hand, by means of his son quoting his versions or proverbs! Whenever he opens his mouth, something that makes me smile or chuckle comes out.

The Gaffer - a great authority on potatoes and practical wear for hobbits (no ironmongery for him ; Lobelia, who came good in the end being one of the few hobbits to initially stand up to the ruffians and who left her money to poor hobbits; Fatty Bolger, for actively resisting the ruffians and still being able to crack a joke when they took him from the lockholds.

You could write an essay on how The Gaffer is actually one of the most important people in The Shire. Forget the Thain and the Mayor and the Master of Buckland, the old lad who holds court in the local pub with his great store of local history, gossip and information really is King of all he surveys! His folk wisdom travels halfway round Middle-earth (and beyond no doubt), and guides Sam and Frodo throughout the quest. He knows all the business of the Shire-folk, and his venerability is intimidating - everyone defers to the Gaffer's wisdom!

My favorite is the Barrow Wight that Frodo and the Hobbits encountered. I find its fate rather sad... Curse you Tom Bombadil!
