For anyone who does not know: this is an invented quote which could possibly have been said in a situation where direct speech is not reported to us.

<blockquote>Quote:<hr> &quot;I will char your straw to ashes, weakling! The seed of my Golden Father burns yet hot in me!&quot;<hr></blockquote>

Who might have said this, and to whom?

<h6> They're making their last film - they say it's the best - we all helped make it - it's called The Death of the West </h6></p>

Re: A new quote that wasn't

Well thought, and well possible, but the straw is meant more figuratively.

Re: A new quote that wasn't

No, why?

Actually, the &quot;charring&quot; is not to be taken too literally, and I tried to lessen its effect by the addition of &quot;hot in me&quot;.

A bit fantastic, maybe, but Gandalf to Frodo, angered by latter's foolish behavior, when hobbit almost refused to leave the ring behind. Straw - Bilbo's sword, golden father - Eru.

Or, better still (returning to dragons and their golden father - Glaurung) Scatha the Worm to Eorl, or whoever killed him. Straw now will mean yellow hair of the Rohirrim

Can't think of nothing suitable. Only the Ring is coming on my mind. Is it Bilbo in Rivendell talking to Frodo after his (Frodo's) return, when older Ringbearer suddenly forgot that ring was already destroyed?

Long before then, but still in the Third Age. Or was that in the Fourth Age? Either way, what I am asking about is much earlier in the Third Age.

Sounds like the death of the White Tree in T.A. 2852. Could the speaker be Thorondir, the Steward who succeeded Belecthor II, whose death coincided with the death of the Tree?

Legolas to Gimli at the sight of the caves of Aglarond; their bargain being Legolas' demand to take Gimli to Fangorn, and Gimli's demand in reply to visit the caves?

Re: Go now...

Red, could you please give me the passage where it is stated that they visited Aglarond _before_ Helm's Deep? Maybe I am missing the decisive point, but when they made the bargain (in The Road to Isengard) they said they'd go to Fangorn first; and in Many Partings Legolas says that they now go to Fangorn.

<h6> Be still, O wand'rer! / Dost thou not hear the sad song of night? / How the wind does beckon thee to rest for a while / and to lend him thine ear? / What woeful tale does it tell tonight? / What tragedy of old? </h6></p>

Re: Go now...

Sharku, I don't even understand your question. Where does Helm's Deep come in? To fulfill their bargain they visited Aglarond first, Fangorn second. So my quote is supposed to be Gimli remarking to Legolas about Fangorn since only then was the bargain fulfilled. Get it?

Re: Go now...

Please do not misunderstand me. Neither do I feel cheated nor do I want to intervene considering the 'asking right'. I was just curious to know where from you derive the information that the caves behind Helm's Deep (to which I was referring shortly by 'Helm's Deep') were visited first and Fangorn second. Maybe I consulted the wrong pages - but the sentence &quot; You shall visit Fangorn with me, and then I will come with you to see Helm's Deep&quot; spoken by Legolas in 'The Road to Isengard' and the words &quot;Come, Gimli!' said Legolas. 'Now by Fangorn's leave I will visit the Entwood and see such trees as are nowhere else [...]&quot; in 'Many Partings' convinced me of my stance.
Please correct me if I am wrong, because I do not want to rely on a false image I may have any further.
No need for distress I hope <img src=smile.gif ALT="">

Sharku is right, no doubt about that. As for the question, is it Frodo talking to Gollum on the Stairs, bidding him leave them?

Re: Go now...

No, Sharku is wrong. Unless, of course, he is reading a different version of LotR than I am! Where you see, &quot;Come, Gimli!&quot; said Legolas. &quot;Now by Fangorn's leave I will visit the deep places of the Entwood...&quot;.....now flip BACK a few pages (just a few) and you will see this...&quot;Then Legolas repaid his promise to Gimli and went with him to the Glittering Caves...&quot;

So...Aglarond was FIRST and Fangorn was second.

*rėd bows...thank you, thank you very much* hehehehe

Then Aragorn took the green stone and held it up, and there came a green fire from his hand."</p>

Good try, HI, but not what I had in mind. Try again!

Re: Go now...

Maybe I should be a bit more forthcoming: you got 1 out of 3 right on this &quot;quote that wasn't&quot;, HI. You've got one of the parties of the conversation right, but the other party and the location/circumstances wrong. Try again!

Re: Go now...

Hmmm...could it be Shelob talking to Gollum about leading the hobbits to her lair?

Re: Go now...

(Sharku bows his head downwards and blushes, his hands nervously fingering behind his back, and his right foot turning with its tip on the ground as if he was to put out a cigarette)

Red, you're right. Thanks for the correction - as you saw, I was indeed referring to the wrong paragraphs; and I mean it when I say that I'm glad to have my wrong impression corrected.

<h6> Be still, O wand'rer! / Dost thou not hear the sad song of night? / How the wind does beckon thee to rest for a while / and to lend him thine ear? / What woeful tale does it tell tonight? / What tragedy of old? </h6></p>

My apologies than red, but I had the same notion (strange as it is), and due to my lazyness did not bother to check it out when first saw this debate.

As for the quote, could it be Gandalf talking thoughtfully to himself looking down from Gwaihir the Windlord's back onto Orodruin?

Re: Go now...

Wow! Great answers. I see that I may have come up with a &quot;never was&quot; quote that was a bit too generalized. But I think I'll let this one play out a little longer, arguing that despite the creativity of the answers, Gollum was &quot;faithful&quot; neither to Gandalf nor to Shelob.

Ring could it be?

The ring itself thinking about Deagol, when Smeagol killed him
