No they were not.
And secondly I wanna add that while guessing is good, its it should still be based on just the smallest amount of insight - if insight is out for lunch - then try research - it is allowed to use the books - actually I inspire it - thats the way to learn more - if your wild shots hit now and again then you will soon forget why and how - but if you read up and earn your right to ask the next question, I think you'll feel hust a little more proud of yourself. Cheers Telchar

Were they all part of a "May-December" marriage (i.e. wife was much younger) ???

I have no clue at all unless maybe that they all married the man of their dreams after he had finished the quest of his life?

Oh my heck, I'm right!? I hardly ever get these. But, Telchar is the one who got things rolling...thanks.
Since I wasn't expecting to have to go next, please give me till tomorrow morning. I have to do some research. Then if 7:00 a.m. (E.S.T) comes and I haven't posted, I relinquish my turn. Thank you all.

I'm bringing this up to the top with a hint. I get the feeling that I am jinxed and kill off topics.
All of them have a thing in common that they had out of their possesion, at least for awhile. Some with their permission some without their permission. The people can be grouped as follows... Beorn Sam Eomer Merry Theoden (at first)

Actually, I'm not sure if it's hard or just lame. And holler (anyone) if another clue is needed.
Or the answer if everyone is bored with this one. [ October 23, 2002: Message edited by: hobbitlass ]

All right, I'm posting the answer so this game can go on (or get buried) cause I'm tired of checking back.
HORSES. They all had horses at one time or the other that was out of their "possesion" at least for awhile. Some with permission some without. Eomer-lent Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas Beorn-lent Gandalf and dwarves and Bilbo Sam-let Bill the pony go at the mines of Moria Merry-had horses stolen at the Prancing Pony Theoden-(at first) Gandalf takes Shadowfax then Theoden gives Shadowfax to him freely. Like I said, not sure if this was incredibly hard or incredibaly lame.

It was a good question, but I also noticed that there were only three days in between the time of posting the original question and when you gave away the answer. Maybe you wouldn't be so "jinxed" if we had more time to think or to even visit the thread.

There is a song or verse about each of these persons, beasts or things in The Lord of the Rings.
Song of Beren and Luthien Riddle of Strider (Aragorn) The Fall of Gil-Galad Verse of the Ring(s) Elven hymns to Elbereth Gilthoniel Snowmane's Epitaph Frodo of the Nine Fingers and the Ring of Doom (which isn't actually written out in the book) The problem with this answer is that there were also songs or verses about other persons, beasts, monsters and things in tLotR, so the list could be continued to include Earendil, Durin, Nimrodel, Goldberry, etc. So I'm pretty sure I have the wrong answer.

No, you are correct, I'm just too lazy to try and remember and then type out all the people/beasts/things who have verses associated with them
Please proceed

There is something in common linked to each of these clues. If I give you a straight list you'll have it in an instant. Even so...
My info is according to tLotR only.

No-o.
First of all, not all of the items in the list are quotes. They are just clues (riddles sorta) that will give you a list of 'Things' (not 'Persons, Beasts and Monsters' or 'Places'). If I actually named the Things, I think you would have the answer immediately. All are Things from The Lord of the Rings. And they have one Thing in common. I think I should edit the list slightly:

Mithril!!
Nenya? The black and "Silver" livery of the Guard the mithril on the doors of Moria The Standard of Arwen with mithril in it. The new gates were made of mithril bilbo's/frodo's mithril coat.

Yes, Lindolirian, you got it. Each item was made of mithril (true-silver) or made with ithildin (which is made from mithril).
The Guard of the Citadel at the Court of the Fountain (and only there) wore helms made of mithril. Their surcoats may have been embroidered in true-silver - the text isn't specific in that. The emblems and letters on Durin's Doors were made using ithildin or starmoon. The new gates of the City were made of mithril and steel. As far as I can find, the only other sure mention of mithril in the book is in Bilbo's Song of Earendil. Well done. Go ahead.

Do you mean Ar-Pharazon the Golden?
if so, they all were leaders in oppositions against Sauron. Arathorn- Captain of the Northern Dunedain. Boromir- Son of the Steward of Gondor. Ar-Pharazon- King of Numenor, attacked and took Sauron prisoner. Elrond- leader in the Last Alliance, and in the War of the Ring. but then something truly easy would be that they are all offspring of Earendil.
