Hi everybody
Hello to you all.
My name is Sabrina, I'm Italian, from Roma so, please forgive me if my English is not perfect... I'm more than a movie fan, I'm a "movie nuts", even if I don't follow the up to date fashon. I'm sure fond of Peter Jackson thrilogy. In these last few weeks I also purchased the whole extended editions and I'm devouring them. But I realized that I'm not as skilled as I "needed" to be in LOTR matter, well... to make the long story short: I'm reading The Lord of the rings in original language and I'm finding it absolutely astonishing... When I finish work at night - I'm a musician and I perform every evening but sunday - I find myself looking forward to going back home to "open that door" and drown myself into Tolkien's world... It seems perfectly real, a piece of history. Even if sometimes I cannot understand some terms, most of all the ones dealing with nature description, his powerful narrative strenght overcomes my lack of terms... and straight reaches my heart, my human ability of "making " images from reading... and I suddenly find myself inside the book, inside the story... I think he's not only a writer... he's a painter... with a few brush touches he makes me imagining a whole world... Forgive my "overlined" enthusiasm. I'm sure that some or many of you, skilled in Tolkien's matter, could find my say a bit silly, but to me, this is a new world and it's incredible the range of emotion I feel while reading it... A little piece of news: last evening, while I was on my break, I was outside smoking a cigarette and met a usual customer from England who lives in the countryside. We started talking about Tolkien and he told me that when he was 17, (now he's 55sh) his family was short of money, so they rented rooms and once Tolkien's grand daughter stayed in his house for a while , and she was so nice to present him with "The hobbit" autographed by Tolkien himself!!!! He still has this precious book in his house and saves it gelously. Have a great day you all, I'm going back to read... xxx, Sabry |

Not silly at all! I think most of us have felt that way at one point or another or we wouldn't be here in the first place. Welcome to the Downs, Raewyn! Enjoy being dead!

Hiya
Hello! My name is Melannen. I'm new (doh). I'm trying to get a hang of this forum thing and how to send messages. (This is so cool.)
I'm new to the whole online Tolkien world. I never thought you could talk about books so much. But God, I love doing it. I'm new to the books as well, and my friends can't get me to shut up. Compared to what you guys talk about, my stuff is common knowledge. I love this! |

Hi there and thank you all for welcoming me in such a warm way.
I'm very happy to be just dead and to have heard some sweet chanting chorus just on the left of the mist in Barrow dows... Your voices awaked me from a spellbound sleep and are leading me to the light... xxx, Sabry Last edited by Raewyn; 04-21-2006 at 05:21 PM. |

Melannen, welcome to Tolkien and to the 'Downs! Don't worry about your level of knowledge, there are all levels active here, and the old farts should appreciate fresh viewpoints. The members of this site are really friendly and helpful! PM anybody if you have any questions.
Raewyn, are you sure you need to worry about your English? You have a very poetic turn of phrase...have you thought about joining an RP? Look the RP forums over! You'd be an asset.

Woahoo!!!
Hi JennyHallu and thank you so much...
What you said means that I'm on the right way with my hard work on this beautiful language I try to practice as much as I can (reading, writing, watching dvds in original language, internet and so on) But I think that to say you really know a language you need to speak, read, write, think, dream and "feel" in this language; as far as concerning the first 5 things, I can say I'm not that bad at them, but about "feeling" in English... uhmmm I cannot say that, yet... I think I should spend some time in an English speaking country to start feeling in your amazing language, thus many terms and most of all, sentence and speech constructions would come out automatically and quite perfectly matching what I really feel and want to communicate... I don't know If I could have really explaned what I mean... Anyway, thank you very much for what you said, it encourages me and helps me to carry on... I won't dare to partecipate a RP yet... Also 'cause I've never joined RP even in Italian... give me time, please...ah ah ah I saw from your signature that you love Loreena too... she's one of my favourite musician... absolutely terrific and very talented. Have a great day!!! xxx, Sabry Last edited by Raewyn; 04-22-2006 at 04:40 AM. |

Actually, Raewyn, my signature is from a poem by Keats. I didn't know anyone sang it until I made it my signature...
Anyway...Welcome again, and I'm wandering off before the chat skwerl eats me.

In Mirth, the four words you'll here most (apart from "Oh shut up, Hookbill") will be: Gandalf, Uncloaked, Mount, and Zoom. Enjoy!

Oh, Mel, dear, ignore young Hookbill, here. He'll suck you right into Mount Zoom if you aren't careful.
Suggestions depend on what you're interested in. If you like to write, check out the RP forums. The Green Dragon is in the Shire and the Eorling Mead Hall is in Rohan; both are good places to go, but I'm admittedly prejudiced in favor of the Hall. If you're feeling ambitious and argumentative, head to Books. It'll teach you to argue at the level of college research papers if you get the right people up against you. You'll find a lot of laughter in Mirth, basic questions answered in Novices and Newcomers. Like I said, it's all up to what you feel like doing. Welcome also to Raewyn. No worries on your English, love, you've got a better grasp of it than most of my native-speaker friends.

Or if you don't like Mirthy stuff or RPG's, try you head at Quotable Quotes or the Quiz Room. However, I don't suggest not looking into the Mirth or the RPG forums. Both are always good for a lauhg, brain teasers and just all around fun. Make sure to join in a Werewolf game to try your hand at playing and, once you feel your up to it, mod your own game. Welcome to the Downs Mel!

Thank you so much for telling me and have a great night and chat. For all the others who want to enjoy this magic poem: THE STOLEN CHILD
WHERE dips the rocky highland Of Sleuth Wood in the lake, There lies a leafy island Where flapping herons wake The drowsy water-rats; There we've hid our faery vats, Full of berries And of reddest stolen chetries. Come away, O human child! To the waters and the wild With a faery, hand in hand, For the world's morefull of weeping than you can understand. Where the wave of moonlight glosses The dim grey sands with light, Far off by furthest Rosses We foot it all the night, Weaving olden dances, Mingling hands and mingling glances Till the moon has taken flight; To and fro we leap And chase the frothy bubbles, While the world is full of troubles And is anxious in its sleep. Come away, O human child! To the waters and the wild With a faery, hand in hand, For the world's morefully of weeping than you can understand. Where the wandering water gushes From the hills above Glen-Car,. In pools among the rushes That scarce could bathe a star, We seek for slumbering trout And whispering in their ears Give them unquiet dreams; Leaning softly out From ferns that drop their tears Over the young streams. Come away, O human child! To to waters and the wild With a faery, hand in hand, For to world's morefully of weeping than you can understand. Away with us he's going, The solemn-eyed: He'll hear no more the lowing Of the calves on the warm hillside Or the kettle on the hob Sing peace into his breast, Or see the brown mice bob Round and round the oatmeal-chest. For be comes, the human child, To the waters and the wild With a faery, hand in hand, from a world more full of weeping than you. |

Hi......Not sure if I'm posting in the right place here, but here I am
I live in the north east of England, Amble, with my Husband Brian and our pet pooch TJ. We live right on the coast but half surrounded by hills and valleys at the same time and the sight of all of this really feels like home to me, and I wouldn't be anywhere else but here. I am origanally Nottingham born, about 50 or 60 miles outside of London and wild horses couldn't get me to go back to live there again, I am home Hugs. Tracy |

Cool the world indeed is a small but most truely wonderful a place to be and so I thank you for your most gracious welcome to me May I ask if you will ease my mind of a worry that is begining to grow there? If you can my worry is this *I was reading a thread about problem posts if you will, and I did then begin to think to myself 'do I dare add my postings now' as this thread was read to me as quite strict? There is no other place I would rather visit and be happy to treat with many and have a fun time but at the same time don't want to worry about making sure I am correct.
Hugs. Tracy x |

Thank you Kath for your advise and lovely welcome. As this is new to me I thought I would go and read up on the rules, try to stick by the guide lines and when I began to read them thats when I started to become weary about my choice to enter a world I've only read about and watched often. Thanks again for keeping me right
