"Walking for pleasure? Why didn't I drive?" he thought, as he usually did at the beginning of an expedition. "And all my beautiful feather beds are sold to the Sackville Baginses! These tree roots would do them good." He stretched. "Wake up, hobbits!" he cried. "It's a beautiful morning."
Probably a question for the newcomers & novices section, but what is that word 'drive' doing there? I thought there were no cars in Middle Earth??

Correct.
The word "drive" was around before cars, and it meant travelling by means of horse and buggy (or other similar forms of transportation that did not require walking).

I never know what passage to use, but I'm hungry and it's supper-time, so I thought this would be fun.

"For this is the Ring of Fire, and herewith, maybe, thou shalt rekindle hearts to the valour of old in a world that grows chill. But as for me, my heart is with the Sea, and I will dwell by the grey shores, guarding the Havens until the last ship sails. Then I shall await thee.'"

Then Curufin looked darkly upon Eol. "Do not flaunt the title of your wife before me," he said. "For those who steal the daughters of the Noldor and wed them without gift or leave do not gain kinship with their kin."
