Abuse it as much as you'd like. . .even if the letters are right there should be a fair few of possible answers.

Why are you guys looking for names ending in G? I thought the last letter would be P for Pippin ... or am I missing something really obvious?
So ... groupp?

First Letter: of of a hero that slew a (better) balrog to defend my people all of you are picking the wrong hero... and Kath, you are close with the P for Pippin guess

annoying rascall is open for interpretation. . . . I never found pippin annoying save for in the movies.
Gollum and Sam however I found very annoying. |

So the hero must be Ecthelion of the Fountain and not Glorfindel. . .

Well if it's not Pippin then it must be Merry?
Eomer of the Rohirrim?

Yay. Been ages since I've done one of these so this'll be horribly easy!
This uncaught serial killer changed his name by one letter.

Darn you, it took me longer to come up with the anagram than it took you to solve it ...
Correct, Mith. Your thread.

Take it as a compliment - it was a clue that "followed the rules" perfectly which made it easy for someone who knew the rules and had been around long enought to be aware of a MIA downer with an eyesplitting name.
As ever it will be a hard act to follow... One for Downers of a certain age perhaps.... The Downs' answer to John McEnroe?

You were on the right path Bethberry but drawn the wrong conclusions...
Beleg I don't know who you mean but I mean (oops) John McEnroe, three time Wimbledon champion.

Perhaps someone who, try as he/she might, simply cannot be serious, and therefore...
... is it Serious Cat? In an altogether serious response to Mr MacEnroe? I.e. "Oh, but I are!"

I love this answer and the thought processes are right - just that, well I wouldn't want to diss Serious Cat (and would not dare!) but this is a downer with an account .. not a haunter of sigs...

Then it would be a notoriously mirthful Downer, such as Oddwen, perhaps?
