Alright, what I am looking for does (this time

) begin with an S, however, it is the lesser known name of the thing in question. And I don't think I'm overstepping by saying it is a Geographical Feature.

Can't tell you much more without blowing it.

Ship of Long Foam (Otherwise known as Cair Andros)?

Divider of the Great: Splits the Anduin.

Eases the Crossing: Um, I suppose it would make crossing the Anduin easier since it would be two narrower rivers rather than one wide one...

Must be well protected: It was guarded against the forces of Mordor by Gondorian soldiers, though the defenses were breached due to not enough men.

The jester was named so in jest, and no where near where the solution is mentioned.

The third part (feared by friends and foes) comes from a specific instance in the text.
