If I stand in Edoras facing west as the windows in Bree, and walked backwards 250 miles (eastward) I would be in the northern part of Nindalf - the closest city on af River is VERY far away... ???

This is real hard.
The thing that pussels me is that you turn left until you are on the same line as the dark wood. I assumed this was Mirkwood (Murky Wood), but could it be Fangor who is this dark wood. My next problem is that I lack good maps and cant see all the citys and bridges therefor I can only guess. It could be Gladden Fields , with a bit of wishfull thinking. |

Guessing here... Lonely Mountain or somewhere around there? Wild guess as I have no idea of what city or bridge that is...
EDIT: Cross posted with Rune. Dark Wood could very well be Fangorn. I should know, I posted a question about an old name for Fangorn in Call My Bluff recently. The name was Tauremornaloma, or Tauremorna. Taur=wood/forest, mor=dark. How could I not think of that??? And yes, a lack of good maps is a problem for me too. Could Dol Guldur be right?

Wrong on all counts. And the Dark Wood isn't Fangorn or Mirkwood.

Nope. The only source I found was of windows facing west, so you'll have to go with that...

I believe the city is Osgiliath, since I think that's the closest city on a river from the Dead Marshes (where I ended up 250 miles from Edoras). A bridge upstream on the Anduin? Are there even any?

Well, the bridge is supposed to be upstream from Osgiliath. Cair Andros perhaps?

The bridge at the Old Ford south of Carrock! Where the Old Forest Road crosses Anduin. From there to Rivendell? The High Pass? I'm lost...

well if you come from the south and turn left at the Old Ford ... until you're on a north/south line with Dimholt, then you're more or less in Rivendell - from there you go 150 miles to the northeast and end up where R Rimdath og The Rushdown meets the Anduin....?

You all haven't found the right Dark Wood yet. Dark Wood is what its name actually means.

None of those. The Dark Wood isn't Dimholt... it's a lot further north than that. But it's south of the Old Forest.

OK...
If we assume... NEVER ASSUME... still if we assume that we have the right city, river and bridge... We travel West / left - from the Old Ford on Anduin All the past Rivendell, Amon Sûl and most of the Shire. Then we stop when we're on a North/South line with Eryn Vorn "The black Wood". From there we turn towards the Northeast and travel another 150 miles until we get our feet weet in Lake Evendim .... is that it?

Thanks
This one, much inspired by Firefoot, souldn’t be too easy...
You stand on “the head of black magic” and travel in a true line toward the “golden-brown head”. When you reach the third river on you path you find a boat and sail down stream until you sense that straight south of you, is the place where the young warrior of the north swore a great oath. From there you turn straight Eastward untill you’re north of the place that the Gorgûn filth name Lugbúrz. Feeling the dread of that place you travel north. You reach yet another river which you follow upstream untill you’re straight south of the last home of the last dragon. Now being weary of your long travels, you feel the call of the Sea, and you travel West until you reach it. Name the water before you, and tell me how you got there...

I start at Dol Guldur, heading in the direction of Dol Baran and cross the Anduin, Limight, and Ondlo. I sail down the Ondlo until I am directly north of the spot in Firien Wood where Eorl swore his Oath to Cirion. Going straight east I end up in Ered Lithui where I am north of Barad-dur. From there I travel north to the River Running which I take upstream to the Long Lake, south of the former home of Smaug. After all this travelling, I decide to just shoot straight west until I end up in Forlindon looking towards Tol Morwen on the Great Sea.

Thank you!
The weary traveller of the Geography Grilling thread leaves the Gulf of Lune to begin his next journey this time in Phurunargian and goes 200 miles in the direction of the Green Hills. From here he takes the nearest river downstream to where it is joined by another. At this point he turns directly north until he meets another river which he takes upstream to its source. After all the wandering he is tired and seeks shelter... what is the nearest populated settlement he could go to?

Well if it's gonna take you guys this long, then I'll give you at least that: It's the Green Hills of Pinnath Gelin.

Ahh well, I'll have a try:
From Moria in a south / southwest direction 200 miles, then I look for a river. The closest I can find is the Entwash close to its scource. I travel down stream untill the Entwash joins with Snowbourn. From there I travel north by the grassy plains of the Eastfold til I meet the Limlight which I follow upstream til is scouce in northern Fangorn. The closest populatet shelter is Caras Caladhon... so thats where I take shelter...

Hmmm well, maybe one of our measurements is off... Let's say the initial run down the Misty Mts is 215 miles, just to make it a bit more accurate.

From Moria in a south / southwest direction 215 miles, then I look for a river. The closest I can find is Isen close to its scource. I travel down stream untill the Isen is joined by the River Adorn. From there I travel north....
This where trouble comes. According to different maps the place where the Isen is joined by R. Adorn is off balance. On one map has the point so far eastward that a northward line reaches the River Glanduin that passes uninhabited Ost-en-Edhil and has is scource close to Moria, which has almost always been populated - so thats one possible answer. On other maps the point is so far westward that a northward line reaches the River Gwatlhó. The scource of Gwatlhó is where the River Bruinen met the River Mitheithel. I cant find any populated dwellings close by... The third quess is that some see the Gwathló and the Mitheithel as one river - the scource of the Mitheithel is in the Misty Mountains close to the Ettenmoors - I guess the closest populated dwelling is the Eagles Eyries - that my last guess ...

Hahaha! Well you followed my directions perfectly, but I had overlooked the fact that Eagles are people too! I had said Rivendell but yes, the eyries are closer, so you have it!

Path 1: You are on Himring and walk i a straight line to Eglarest
Path 2: From there you walk straight north until you come to Annon-in-Gelydh Path 3: From Annon-in-Gelydh you walk towards Gabilgathol, but you stop when you cross Path 1 - what are you standing on???
