Reputations are not fair. Just look at David Beckham.
In fact, I usually feel as much of a fraud as he is. Point being, the system is about reputations and not quality or value.

Say, that makes sense, Eomer.
I think the system has changed the meaning of the word reputation for me. And that's a fatal mistake on my part. Last edited by Lhunardawen; 06-13-2005 at 02:28 AM. |

Well, I left Aragorn's court under the cover of darkness, in rather a hurry. Arwen warned me that Anduril was getting jealous. Pah! Dwarvish upstart of a blade...can't even talk, so far as I've heard...

I don't think the reps are such a big deal. I always used to look at post count for a quick judgement of members and how wrong is that?
It's like the clothing we wear. Sure, someone could have really nice, expensive clothes but that doesn't make them fashionable. Anyway, what was my point? Oh yeah, good posts don't have to have good reps and neither do people. Hopefully no one goes off of the reps too dependantly, and if they do, they're loss. The Good People: The ancients: Usually quite learned in all that is Tolkien, usually aged a bit, usually good writers. The Newbies: Fresh ideas, new inspirations and dynamics to each thread. And that has nothing to do with Reps. And then there's the middle. All us who sit here somewhere between 2 and 6 rep boxes, usually without titles, and a lot of the time are teenagers who secretly want to be noticed by the new and the old alike. We're the ancients in training perhaps.

If you're posting stupid things then surely you deserve bad reps.

Agreed Eomer.
Question: Does every little green box represent a hundred rep points? If so, somethin' is out of what with mine.

Yep, I think Aragorn's court gets 6 boxes? And it takes 800 pts or something like that. Anyway you get the idea, wants you get to the upper "echelons" it takes more rep points to get the boxes as well as the new title.

People have been repping me anonymously; people in high places.
Maybe some people prefer to do it that way?

Neg reps should be signed because then you don't know who rep'd you and why they gave you a bad rep, makes you more made when you see a red square pop up for no reason...

Exactly Gil-Galad, I know I've made posts that would warrant a bad reputation. But, just one of my biggest pet peeves (on this forum) is people who just give a neg. rep number 1 without signing it, and even worse without giving an explanation.

Would it be impossible to change the system so that any rep received automatically comes with a signature?
I'll admit to not having checked this entire thread on the subject, but the general consensus seems to be that most people (that have checked in here) try to leave their name (although they can forget) or feel that they ought to when leaving negative rep.

I've given one neg rep only, and I explained and signed it. I agree that the "willing to hurt but afraid to strike" attitude is quite contemptible...

I agree with the system as it is and think we have a great self-governed system. On other board and forums there are so many trolls and flamers that it's annoying to try and discuss almost anything. I choose to PM instead of giving negative rep. I never have given any negative rep but I guess I would in the case of something rather crass and inappropriate.

I also have never given a negative rep, and have only recieved one. That was a very long time ago, probably right when the system was being set up. No one did sign it, although by the remark I pretty much knew. I will save them the disgrace of naming them(partially because I have since gotten over it and don't even remember who it was).
But personally I don't think I've ever even thought about 'negging' anyone. If I see something I don't like, I either ignore it or argue against it in the thread. It would probably have to be a direct attack on me as a poster to receive a negative rep. Actually, in that situation, I would probably just report it as a bad post.

A definition of an affliction
repdrunk <rep'dr&[ng]k> adj
Having temporarily impaired faculties due to receiving too much rep at one time. Symptoms include delusions of grandeur where the afflicted thinks that his/her following posts are dictation from Eru, bulletproof and just utterly the most fantastic prose ever composed. Upon sobering up the afflicted feels a bit foolish and considers removing same posts. usage
Apologies for all past and future occurrences.

Repdrunk eh alatar - I've never been it but it sounds like fun .
I've had a couple of negative reps but I'm not entirely convinced that they weren't accidental as the comments didn't match the negativity. Is this possible?

REp stays on the last setting you had it on so if you give a neg rep you have to actively change it back to positive. Positive is not the default setting each time. So I guess it was either a slip of the mouse or you got repped by someone who is a bit careless.
While I have nothing against people using the neg rep justly (ie signed, for genuine explained reasons not vitriol or vengeance), I do think they should be careful to avoid this. Especially since they would have to wait to correct their error according to the normal "Spread it around" rules...

I'm certain I was repdrunk a short while ago - I got about 10 reps in 3 days, 4 for one post. It was most exhilarating, though I'm back to my normal self now.

I think it's not important how many points you get from a rep, though. It's just so nice to see that somebody actually liked your post. Personally, I feel that I have learned from your rep comments, thank you.

Very true. It makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, like you just swallowed a cat.
So, I'll admit to being lazy, I don't have time to read through 20 pages on reputations. It may already have been done, but perhaps people have changed since then. So: What are your requirements for repping a post? Most of the reps I give are for posts that make me laugh audibly, humour being what I'm looking for. I do give the oddrep for a well balanced arguments or good point in the Books, but this is comparatively rare. Consider yourself lucky if you get one. |

I just swallowed a cat, all I feel is woozy. (Just kidding. )
I got a few reps for a thread I started, it was kinda special feeling, like I just got kissed by Frodo. *Sigh* Oh uh, where am I? Oh, right! Reputations! I got a few reps, and felt special, then thought: "What are reputations for?" So I ask: What are they for?

I received a completely anonymous, comment-less rep from a Crazy caption. Quite needless to say, it was sort of scary and surprising after being used to reps with comments and signatures. But whoever you are...thanks!

Lhuna, I know what you mean. I've gotten a couple of reps fairly recently (one a few days ago, the other within the last month or so) that had comments but weren't signed. I get so curious about who wrote them that I tend to forget about the rep itself. It's like a puzzle - "well, it couldn't be so-and-so because their points would be higher, but it probably isn't that person either because they always sign their reps..." But it is appreicated nonetheless.

The identity of the anonymous repper has been revealed, but due to a lesson hard-learned, I'd rather not disclose that information (not that anybody's interested ). So, you-know-who-you-are, thanks for the third time!

Just so everyone knows, I randomly select someone each day and give them a negative rep and don't sign it. I do this for several reasons- to fuel discussion on this thread, to make people wonder what in the world they said wrong, and most importantly, to infuriate people.
My psychiatrist told me I had a lot of hostility towards the world and people in general and that I should find a way to vent. Giving anonymous negative reps is how I deal with my emotional problems. I hope you guys don't mind. After all, a negative rep is a small price to pay for keeping me in a good mood. I mean- my arrogant, unyielding posts are bad enough sometimes. Can you imagine them with maliciousness and extreme disdain added? Now that's a scary thought. Oh- and congrats to Fea who is now bound for the Straight Road, though I doubt one so- well... bonkers , will be able to stay on a straight road for long.
