This may sound really strange but the part where Gandalf "dies" always cracks me up, Its like 'hehe, the whips supposed to go round his knees....BTW why arn't they helping him?!!' also several scenes during the movies make me fall off my seat laughing especially at the 'Long-expected party' when Merry and Pippin are already adults when they should be about 12 and 18.

Aragorn: You should be dead.
I agree with Eressië Ailin, how Viggo says it is hilarious, and it's almost as if he WANTS Frodo to be dead.

Define 'corny', please.
The only line that struck me as misplaced was the one by Legolas from TTT, also mentioned by others: "A red sun rises, blood has been spilled tonight" - he say's it sorta out in the blue, with no apparent motive. Oh, & I'm not too fond of Sams speech either.

Hmmm...I think most of the lines the Uruk-Hai said were rather corny (maybe a few will disagree ) because they lacked…what’s the word…ferocity! Actually, they were more comical than scary!

I think all of Grima's lines were a bit corny. He didn't seem very sinister to me. He seemed like the stereotypical minion/sidekick to me.

TTT, (although I consider myself Frodo) when Frodo says, "Yes, I can smell it". I mean, they were trying to make it sound "SERIOUS".
And when Legolas always says those corny action phrases, like "Orcs!" or "Goblins!", and don't forget when Gandalf and Saruman are talking, and Saruman is talking about Sauron's Eye, and Gandalf says "The Eye of Sauron!", acting like he's the smartest person in Arda!
And when Gandalf says: "Spies of Saruman!" CORNY!

I don't like "Looks like meat is back on the menu boys". Like an Orc would ever look at a menu.
Another one that bugged me was the Nazgul saying "she-elf". Somehow I have a hard time picturing Tolkien using the word "she-elf".

I'm rather surprised that although "Claim him" has entered into this discussion many, many times, none of you have mentioned the whole "What's this? A ranger caught off his guard?" bit before it, which was amazingly corny, with the line "I do not fear them", and Arwens apparently super-dooper new low voice which wasn't great at all. Also, I love the bit just after the flood when she starts picturesquely crying (even though I have seen the film many times, I still can't help but expect Frodo to come alive and kiss Arwen as soon as her tear falls on him). Love being used in a sarcastic way, of course.
So basically, I vote Arwen. And Legolas. (Especially when he has a go at rolling Rs in Lothlorien ("Balrrrrrog of Morrrrgoth")...that cracks me up. And his "worried" expression, whenever someone dies.).

I agree. That "Balrrrrog of Morrrrgoth" thing was so corny. I think Legolas should win the Most Corny Elf Award for LotR.
Hey, i'm new here, so hi everyone. Just wanted to say that I thought a lot of wot Legolas said sounded a bit corny. Specially that line '...a red sun rises, blood has been spilled this night...' Also that whole bit that Gandalf does at the end of TTT, the rip off of Churchills speech 'The battle for helms deep is over...blah blah etc' Rest of the film was great though.

Thumbs up

"A red sun rises" is one of my favorite Legolas lines! I like that old fashioned, "wordy" stuff. It's true with the book, (IMO) I wish there was lots more of it in the movie. It's when they speak with modern contractions an modernized informal language that I cringe! Isn't "A red sun rises" from the book?

Welcome, Laura! Here's a rootbeer for your enjoyment. (|_|
Hmmm, I must not be very picky. Most of the lines I don't have a problem with.
'Let's hunt some orc.'
It IS corny, bit kind of funny too. My friends thought it was a great line.
'If you want him, come and claim him!'
I think the main problem here that most people (like me) would of liked Frodo to say his line 'By Elbereth and Luthien the Fair, you will not have the Ring nor me!' instead of Arwen taking over everything. Come on PJ, just one little line?
'A red sun rises. Blood has been spilled this night.'
The quote is fine, it is just not logical. Evey sunrise has red in it, so you might as well say that every night someone gets killed (which, could be true). It just seems a bit odd.
'No! Not the beard!'
I'm sorry, but I would say that too if I was in that position.
'..A baalroog of Moorgooth..'
I thought it was neat that they mentioned something from the Sil. of course, that's just me.
See you later!
~M

Exactly, Liriodendron. What if Legolas had said "OK, no beard" and let Gimli fall.
The "red sun" line is ok. Its the way Legolas stops, strikes a pose and just says this line that bugs me.

I find it interesting how some people's corniest lines are other people's favourites. The line between drama and corn and comedy and corn is thin indeed.
H.C.

Yes! Though some lines might be unforgivable, it lies in the skill of the actor to not cross the fine line into cheesiness! (IMO) I liked "red sky", and "meat's on the menu", but I thought Gandalf's eye rolling at Elrond when Merry and Pippen run up to join the fellowship was very cheesey. I blame the script though!
[ May 30, 2003: Message edited by: Liriodendron ]

Why is it inconceivable that Legolas would know anything about blood being spilled? I hear this argument a lot. It is also not that corny of a line. Elves study nature, they never sleep, they just drink it all in. Therefore I'd guess perhaps Legolas knows just a bit about nature ( he probably picked up some tutilege from his pops [king of mirkwood] ). It almost sounded more like the Nazgul said, " Give up the halfling SHEIETH!"
or something like that ( perhaps something the Nazgulians just made up? ). Keep in mind, although orcs may never look at the menus, I'm sure they're always ogeling meat with one eye! Hmmm, spies of Saruman..it sounds more like he's stating a fact for the benefiet of the stupider hobbits ( enter Pippin here ) & perhaps Gimli; I have nothing against that at all. Yeah, it sounds like aragorn was going to pilfir the Ring off Frodo's dead body or something... ! Anyway, here are my least favorites:
Aragorn-"Legolas! What do your elf eyes see?"-gotta make sure to remind him that he does have elf-eyes!
Frodo-"They're here..." hmmm, not as bad as it used to be.
Aragorn & Legolas argument at Helm's Deep- it just wasn't anywhere close to right sounding...
Aragorn yell at the pile of burning Uruks- this guy did take acting lessons, right?
I'll add some more later...

The thing I didn't like about "Aragorn going ranger" is that, not only was there just a battle with horse hoofs churning the ground, but also, afterwards, the Men dragged all the Orc bodies into a pile. What was there for Aragorn to see? A bunch of scuffed dirt, thats all. Any evidence should have been ruined by the horses and the piling up of Orc bodies.

I like the 'red sun rises' one, it's...well...amusing. Personally, just about anything Arwen says (especially in the Two Towers) is extremely corny. I don't understand why they put her in the second movie at all?!..
Corniest lines Top 5 (my opinion)
1.
quote:
What's this? Oh, and any Legolas' action lines were made me want to laugh.

I didn't mind Legolas's one-liners in Fotr. It was probably because he just came out of acting school that they gave him limited lines... . In books it says that Aragorn can 'read a bent blade of grass', or something like that. He's only been out in the Wild for about 45 years... .
Here are some more of my dislikes:

1.- Pippin's girly like ugh-scream when Treebeard began to talk.
2.-"Merry!"- Pippin when the orc grabbed Merry, it sounded VERY out of place, not corny, just strange sounding.
Gotta run, but one last thing. I found it strange that the orc is on top of Merry, ready to poke his sword through his eye if he wanted to; but then when Treebeard stepped on him, he had shifted down to where he could scarcely have stung Marry's hair foot with his sword. Wierd. Out.

[ May 31, 2003: Message edited by: The Only Real Estel ]
