Starting to wander off course a bit...

If you want a political theory discussion, it might be better to take it to the Barrow-Downs general forum (entitled Barrow-Downs) and leave this forum for discussion of the Movies!

I've done these before and they tend to get long-winded (at least when I'm involved!) and convince no one to change their mind.

But I've certainly enjoyed this discussion about the viability of cinematic adaptations of a literary masterpiece.

Barrow-Downs~Bare Bones~Tar Ost-in-Eruhir~Grand Adventures~The Hobbits~Tolkien Trail

Re: I think I figured it out!

Whoops, we've done it again (Good god, now I sound like Britney Spears. Ugh.). Gil's quite right, of course. So I'll make an attempt to bring it back to topic.
I hate the commercialization too, that will go hand in hand with the making itself. so by not watching the movie I can't stop the Happy Meals (and I will certainly not buy the Lurtz action figures) or the image of Liv Tyler as Arwen. I'm going to watch the movie and try to enjoy it.
It's a different matter that I wish it wasn't being made at all.

What if - what if this is as good as it gets?

Re: I think I figured it out!

The year before last, I did a group assignment for English on the topic "Hollywood". We decided to compare books and the movies based on them.

Every person we surveyed but one said they prefered reading books to seeing movies in general. But then, we did survey the advanced english class...

More specifically to this topic, we found that people tend to prefer the book/movie they read/saw first. For example, we watched Forrest Gump and said "great movie" and then read the book it was based on and pretty much said "not as good". Whereas we'd all read the book Matilda before and said "great book", then watched the movie version and said "crap movie version".

So I think everyone here, having already read the LotR will probably think the books are better than the movies (not necessarily that the movies are bad in their own right, just that the books are better as the LotR). But someone seeing the movies first will be more likely to read the books and go "what a wierd book".
"This sig is proudly quote-free." -Me.
(Also known as eoz, and now has a non-Tolkien forum, called everything else.)

Re: I think I figured it out!

Here're my thoughts on the books vs. movies debate.

I tend to enjoy both, but only if I've seen the movie first. Case in point. I realy liked Jurassic Park when it came out...then I read the book. The book absolutely blew the movie away. If I'd read the book first I would have been sorely disappointed in the film. As it is, I can enjoy both. I'm still looking forward to the LotR movies though because I don't expect them to be all-encompassing.

-*-The X Phial-*- You must believe in free will, you have no choice. well I won't try to analyse communism or and other "ism" here and now.
About the film. I definitely wanted to see LOTR made. I knew they'd have to cut alot, but what I was not prepared for was Super-Arwen, or the Staff-o-matic battle scene. With technology today, it could be done very well indeed. Those who love the movie want to silence those who hated it. Those who hated it can't understand why it's so popular. As for me, I think every movie does'nt have to be a roller-coaster, special effects showcase. I guess it was a "modernized" version of Tolkien.

well, now I'm a "whiner". Thanks alot buddy. I do have a problem with Arwen and P.J. Changing the scene at the ford was just stupid. Frodo tried to stand alone against the riders. The chase scene where the rider gets close and reaches out to grab Frodo from the horse with Arwen was stupid too. Why did'nt Jackson just have a "flying" balrog snag Frodo and accidently drop him on the lead rider, bounce off and hitch a ride on the horses that were on the crashing waves. Could have ridden all the way to Mordor. Jackson could have saved even more time that way. Heck, condense it even more so the flying balrog drops him onto Mount Doom. THAT would save a precious 2 hours. Then he could have expanded Arwen's character even more. Arwen get's the phial of Galadriel and accompanies him to Mordor. SHE kills Shelob. Master Samwise is just a distraction anyway.

As for watching a movie, not a book, if Jackson changes much more it won't even be the Lord of the Rings. And for the person who said it should NEVER be made into a movie, I gotta disagree. With the cgi they have now, they could have done an excellent job. Just don't add your own ideas to it. speaking of that.."Hey, I've got an idea... let's make Rosie Cotton a warrior-hobbit princess." "Cool!! That will make it more dramatic, and make it 'flow' better.
