Manwe made the final decision, with authority given to him by Iluvatar.
He decided that none of the Eldar may have two living spouses. Finwe was allowed to remarry only if Miriel wished to stay in Mandos until the end of Arda. |

Hrm...My understanding is that it was Mandos' decision that stood.

Go ahead, Elenhin. You were close since Manwe was the one who declared Mandos the judge of the matter. And I gave it away already. :P

Well, I answered without checking the books, so I guess your answer is more correct than mine
But, if you say I got close enough: Of what deed of the Valar did Tolkien say that 'it came near to countering Morgoth in his own way', and that it had a 'selfish or neglectful' motive? |

Nope - evil may have come because of the invitation, but its motive wasn't selfish or neglectful.

Well, since it's been so long and your answer was almost the one I was looking for, you can have the next question.
What I originally meant was the lifting of the Pelori mountain chain. It was made to counter Morgoth's possessiveness with rival possessiveness and thus it was somewhat selfish (even though the exact nature of the possessiveness was different). The Valar also let Morgoth roam free in Middle-Earth in that time, so the deed can be called neglectful as well. |

No, it wasn't Manwe or Melian. Good choices though.

Ah. Sorry. Not quite up to date with the new format of the quiz room; first time I've posted here in half a year, after all.

hmmm... Nienna is the sister of Irmo and Namo in the mind of Iluvatar. In earlier myth Nienna also had two brothers, but it was not the feanturi - who was it?
