&quot;Swertings&quot; was (according to Sam) a hobbitish reference for Southrons. Perhaps &quot;swarthy-ones&quot; does it in modern English. I assume moon-land is Ithilian (and a nice play on sun-land). The swertings Sam encountered in Ithilian had some war-mumakil which Sam called &quot;oliphaunts.&quot;
