Gee, I am BACK! And I feel somewhat disappointed that some of my posts got deleted after the site shift... But that would never stop me from airing my views whenever given the chance
So these are everybody's favorite characters, huh? Lemme add to the lists... All time favorite: Bill the pony (For kicking Bill Ferny from Buckland) Favorite fox: That fox which spied the three hobbits (Frodo, Sam and Pippin) leaving Hobbiton. Favorite Hound: Huan (He can talk) Favorite Cat: The cat with a fiddle in Frodo's song at Bree Prancing Pony. Favorite Cow: The cow which leapt over the Moon in Frodo's song at Bree Prancing Pony. Favorite Horse: Shadowfax (Why not, if he is as fast as they said...?) Favorite Wolf: Carcharoth (He ATE a Silmaril!) Favorite Spider: One of those that nearly ate Bilbo and Co. Favorite Balrog: The one Gandalf killed Favorite Talking Sword: Gurthang (It gutted enough people to be able to talk) Favorite Dragon: The one that can defeat a Balrog! (Pun intended) Actually, Glaurung. Favorite Bird: One of those Eagles, don't really mind which one Favorite Man: Faramir (For being most romantic just when the world is on the brink of destruction) Favorite Woman: Eowyn (For being soft just when the world is on the brink of destruction) Favorite Male Hobbit: Pippin (For being most comical) Favorite Female Hobbit: Lobelia (Old lady with sufficient iron to beat one of those ruffians in the Shire) Favorite Wizard: Hmm tough choice... Saruman (for not needing to use any magical/spiritual/psychic power to control people) Favorite Male Elf: Celebrimbor (He made the three rings and died painfully for not revealing them to Sauron) Favorite Female Elf: Luthien (For throwing one over Morgoth!) Favorite Male Dwarf: Thorin Oakenshield (Hey, he hired Bilbo) Favorite Female Dwarf: Huh? The one with the silkiest beard (Pun intended! ) Favorite Male Orc: Grishnakh (Now, this is SOME orc! He has enough brains to try to cheat BOTH Sauron and Saruman!) Favorite Female Orc: One that is really named. Favorite Trolls: Either of those happy threesome Gandalf tricked into becoming stone Favorite Maia: Sauron, for being able to transform into one big eyeball with two hands but only nine fingers (Pun intended) Favorite Dark Lord: Morgoth (Who don't love Satan?) Favorite Valar: Tulkas (He wrestled with slimy Morgoth and actually got him) Favorite Tree: Old Man Willow (Old tree with an attitude) Favorite Ent: Treebeard (Yet another old tree with an attitude) Favorite Entwife: One that would show up to continue the race of Ents Favorite Overlived Hobbit: Gollum Favorite Worm: Grima (Pun intended) Favorite enigma: Tom Bombadil! ("I will sing his roots off!") Er just before the admin deletes this pile of nonsense, I would like to express that almost every character that has been manufactured by Prof T is exceptional and well-wrought. So, please! Take it all in as a joke! |

Well, I suppose I can add my picks to this thread now, as I've been enjoying everyone else's for a while now!
All Time Favourite: Frodo Man: Aragorn Woman: Eowyn Elf: This is a tough question, having so many great ones to choose from! Galadriel, I must finally say, although I'm sore tempted by Feanor and Finrod (and sneaking up from the rear--Celebrimbor!) Gotta love those Noldor! Hobbit: Pippin! Dwarf: Gimli, but Mim is also quite amusing (don't like him as well as Gimli, though!) Wizard: Gandalf the Grey Bad Guy: Another tough one! If you could call Gollum bad, he'd go here, but also Glaurung (OK, he's a dragon, not a 'guy' but he's REALLY BAD!) Others: Bilbo, Bombadillo, Yavanna, Gwaihir, Huan, Luthien and Arwen her Third Age reflection, the comically drunken Elves in Thranduil's hall (*snicker*), ah, I can't think of anything else right now! I might fill it in a little differently if I try this again later! For now, I take my leave. Cheers, Lyta

List topics are rather boring to read if there is no explanation for the choices. Please tell us why those characters are your favorites!

Oh goody!!!! I get to tell everyone who is my favs and why!!!
All Time Favourite: Strider Why: He's mysterious, dark, a Ranger of the North who could someday become king... He knows how to fight... Man: Faramir Why: Because he marries Eowyn, and in the books he helps Frodo and Sam along their way... plus he's mean to Gollum... Woman: Eowyn Why: She can fight, she's cool, she marries Faramir, plus she killed the Nazgul without the help of a lightsaber... she did that with a sword and a hobbit! Elf: Elrond Why: Hmm... because he's a wise and noble half-elf who chose the elven way, and not the human side. Plus he has a ring of power... Hobbit: Pippin Why: Any hobbit who can act like such a fool, and survive the quest of the ring, rocks. Sorry, Merry... Dwarf: Gimli Why: ...he beat Legolas in a counting fight. And Legolas didn't kill him for it! Wizard: Gandalf Why: Well... mainly because he killed a balrog and then came back to life after falling down a bottomless pit... Bad Guy: Saruman Why: Because if I didn't, he'd lock me up for not joining with him... plus he wears multi-colored robes... that's cooler than white... a white page can be wrote on... white cloth can be died... Other: Tom Bombadil Why: He is the eldest, and rhymes everything... plus he can talk to Old Man Willow, and make him obey!!! Well... that about covers it. -Eowyn Skywalker |

solid
Well this thread is going really well, still got about another thousand members to add their favourites. Great idea Estelyn about making favourite characters and WHY? Aslong as people don't right a book on why he/she/it/s their favourite, it should be interesting. Special mention to the hottest crispiest hobbit around for his/her extremely in depth character analysis.

All Time Favourite: Aragorn ( who else! )
Man: Boromir why: he´s really nice, kind, brave and proud, and I like how much he loves Minas Tirith, and how proud he is of it Woman: Arwen why: mostly because of her love for aragorn Elf: Haldir and Elrond (cannot choose ) why: I love the way Haldir speaks in Lothlorien, all the things he says, his love for his land, and all. Elrond, on the other hand is more distant, wise... he´s another sort of elf Hobbit: Frodo why: there´s more to him that meets the eye Dwarf: Gimli he´s nice, funny, and well, I like his love for Galadriel, and his friendship with Legolas Wizard: Gandalf ( closely followed by the Ithryn Luin and Radagast ) I love Gandalf, he´s with Aragorn my favourite character. And I have always been really curious about the Ithryn Luin . And Radagast just seems so devoted to Middle Earth! Bad Guy: the Nazgul I find them fascinating, with those black horses and winged creatures Other: Treebeard why: well, I love him being so slow and patient, and the words he chooses... I would also place between my favourites: Turin, Fëanor ( it´s really funny how rude and proud he can be, even to Morgoth and the Valar ), Celebrimbor, Celeborn, Galadriel, Smeagol, Thingol, Huan, Beleg... there are so many... Righty-o, here's my listage
All time Favorite: Grima Wormtongue, because he pulled a Theoden on me and spoke nice words and made me love him more than any other character. But really, I think he's a very complex character. He's skeevy but always makes us wonder... did he *really* love Eowyn? Anyhow, he's my fanfiction muse because he never shuts up in my head. Man: Hmmm... lemme go with Faramir. Because of that excellent quote: "War must be... but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend..." Woman: Eowyn Hobbit: Sam, for his loyalty and overall adorable-ness. Male Elf: Maglor... Feanor's emo kid Female Elf: Luthien, because in a surprising show of role-reversal, she goes to save her man from mortal peril. Dwarf: Thorin Oakenshield, for his spiffy name Wizard: Saruman, since he just gets so full of himself. And his voice is nice, if nothing else. Bad guy: Morgoth, the original baddie! He's so much more hardcore than Sauron Couples: Faramir/Eowyn, and lets not leave out the Couple that Never Was, Grima/Eowyn. Because Faramir/Eowyn is just a match made in heaven, but I pity Wormy as well. He deserves some love too, ya know. Hurrah! I like listing... Last edited by Encaitare; 09-09-2004 at 08:21 PM. |

All time favorite: Faramir. Such a great guy.....drool.........in the books I mean of course......happy smile..........
Fav man: Théoden has some awesome lines. Aragorn of course is up there. Fav woman: Tar-Míriel, really I would've said Éowyn like most everyone else, but to be different: she was one of the Faithful when the head of the Anti-Faithful was her husband. That's gotta take courage. Fav dwarf: Dwalin, because I love the sound 'dw' makes. Fav male elf: Glorfindel, the Balrog-Slayer! Fav female elf: Lúthien. Haven't actually read the tale yet but from what I hear: she almost defeated Sauron on her own. That's great! (Much better than sitting at home and making your boyfriend a flag, if I may say so.) Fav Hobbit: Sam, sorry I can't be original, but he's the real hero. "For over shadows rides the Sun and stars forever dwell, / I will not say the day is done, nor bid the stars farewell." Fav Wizard: Gandalf, not much of a choice is there? (Haven't others said that about Saruman?) Fav Bad Guy: GRIMA! He's my kind of bad guy (yes I have a kind of bad guy!). He's so calm and collected, so calculating. Not "I'm going to destroy the world!", which is just pointless. And a pitiable character I think...I worry about myself somtimes.... Fav Couple: Aldarion and Erendis! j/k Sam and Roise! Sam and Rosie definitely!

Nim's faves
Okay guys, it was some hard choises, but some were easy answers.
All Time Favourite: Legolas! What can I say? I'll never let go of a childhood hero I've just loved that elf ever since my mother read LotR to me the first time... (That'll be about 11-12 years ago now) Man: Aragorn. He's just cool, do I need to say more? Though Faramir came in as a close second. Woman: That has got to be Eowyn. For being amazingly cool, showing real woman-power and still marry and be happy in the end. You go girl! Hobbit: Frodo and Samwise (sorry, but it's impossible for me to picture one without the other!). Because they have the greatest friendship ever, and none of them would have made it alone, but together they accomplished the impossible. Elf: Hmm, Glorfindel, when not allowed to name Legolas again. Because he was my hero till Legolas turned up. You can't imagine how disappointed I was when Glorfindel was not the one selected to accompany Frodo (the first time only, of course!). Dwarf: That'll be Gimli. Because he's (almost) the only Dwarf in LotR, because he's cool, because he's able to see beyond prejudice and befriend Legolas, because he's part of a friendship second to none but that of Frodo and Sam, and because he's the only Dwarf to travel to the undying lands in the west. Wizard: Gandalf the Grey. Good old Gandalf is just THE wizard, no question about that. Bad Guy: That'll be Gollum/Smeagol. He's got all the characteristics of a good villain, yet there's a hint of good in him as well and though he doesn't mean to he is the one who manages to destroy the Ring. Other: Tie between The Nazgûl, Bombadil and Fangorn, they're all cool, and very well-written... I guess that's it really

Ah, this is a hard one. But, I'll give it a try....
All time favorite: Faramir (book), he is strong, and he just... just reminds me a lot of myself. I find myself mostly like him. man: Faramir (book), please read above :P woman: Eowyn, very independent. You should not underestimate her Elf: Galadriel, mystic, but so cool. I also like Lórien else in general when it comes to elves. Hobbit: Pippin, aaww, foolsih Pippin Dwarf: Gimli, not much to say. Wizard: Gandalf, wise and mystic Bad Guy: Uglúk Other: Gollum, cool creature

All Time Favourite: Feanor - Skilled and passionate beyond measure. The most skilled of all the elves.
Man: Theoden - Inspiring speeches, inspiring patriotism and pretty nifty in battle for someone his age. Woman: Arwen - This choice is made on the movie, purely because of Liv Tyler. Elf: I'd like to say Cirdan, but I don't know much about him, so Elrond it is. He's a serious, wise and very respectful figure. Hobbit: Bilbo - Humorously eccentric and a great adventurer. Dwarf: Thorin - Good fighter, full of pride for his background and desire for riches. Wizard: Gandalf - Again like Elrond, very respectful, wise and powerful and has some of the greatest lines in both the books and the films. Bad Guy: Smaug - Has a wonderful way with words and is extremely destructive. Other: Treebeard - Tremendous strength and wisdom and I love some of his attitudes to the world that is outside Fangorn. This is too hard!
All Time Favorite: There`s too many. Either Fëanor, Elessar, Merry, Faramir, Pippin, Balin, or Beren, for different reasons. Man: Beren- I love his part of the story. He has the qualities of an ideal hero (or man, you choose.) And Faramir because he has an awesome personality, and in the movie, hot. Woman: Èowyn- She symbolizes (sp?) women. I think it`s great that Tolkien tried to show that woman can be just as heroic as men. I also liked Haleth for the same reasons. She-Elf: Luthien Tinuviel- I loved her part of the story. He-Elf: Fëanor- I like how he stands up for what he believes in. Hobbit: Merry- He seems very smart (for a hobbit) and brave, (not to mention, he`s very good looking in the movie) Dwarf: Balin- He was always caring toward Bilbo, no matter what. Wizard: Gandalf the Grey- I love his pointy hat! Bad Guy: The Witch King and the other Nazgûl- They have the traits of a wonderful enemy. Dark, mysterious, terrifying, sneaky, and unforgiving. Ent: Bregalad (Quickbeam)- Since he is the fastest of the Ents, he is unique. So cool! Nimrodel

Man: I can't decide between Faramir and Boromir. They both had such good hearts. Woman: Galadriel, just because she was so wise and kind of creepy. Dwarf: Thorin Wizard:Gandalf Hobbit: Definatly Sam, without him Frodo would have gave way under the power of the ring and the world would be doomed. Elf: Thranduil, anyone that fathered Legolas has to be a pretty good guy. Even though he wasn't to nice to the Dwarves in The Hobbit. Bad guy: The Witch King Other: Gollum |
