I didnt want to turn down people for good guesses, so I will give it to you Watcher. The real reason I was thinking of was because he did not want Aragorn and Boromir (And maybe Legolas too) to try and come and help him. I remembered reading that they were running up to help and that is when Gandalf broke the bridge. So I always thought that he did it not only to keep the orcs from coming and to kill the Balrog, but also to save his freinds from trying to fight the foe that would kill them if they tried. I was a astonished too! It is the ancient egyptians. For one thing the Faraos wore a high helmlike thingy very much alike to the crown of Gondor - just without the wings - And the Gondorians was very obsessed with tombs and they embalmed their Kings. Tolkien wrote this in a letter to a woman who asked, among other things, about the design of the crown of Gondor. In the letter he also made a sketch drawing of the crown So go on Beregond Anar kaluva tielyanna!
