(But fair point too - he could at least have taken one trustworthy companion or squire.)

Is it not possible that Boromir himself refused to take an escort of any kind? To quote Gandalf:
"Boromir claimed the errand and would not suffer any other to have it. He was a masterful man, and one to take what he desired." Galadriel55 noted this in terms of Boromir's pride, but perhaps he simply desired to go alone and, if any gainsaid him, he stood firm to his convictions. Perhaps he had a noble reasoning like "No other worthy man should be made to abandon the defence of Gondor on my account."

Of course, we're talking about a guy who wanted to avoid Moria (about which he knew very little) by either walking in front of known traitor Saruman's front porch, or going hundreds of miles out of the way around the White Mountains.

This is a man who has been compared to Eärnur. He was that King who accepted the Witch-King's challenge at Minas Morgal with a small escort. Boromir was not an idiot but he'd be more the Crixus type from Spartacus, than say Spartacus.

Aragorn was not keen on entering Moria either. "I do not wish to enter Moria a second time." [A Journey in the Dark] The Hobbits and Legolas were of the same mind.

Yes, but none of them pretended they didn't know of Gandalf's news of Saruman's treason and Ring-lust.
