So bloody obvious when you see it... I think you two just made up that user. I've never heard of such a name.

GAH! Exactly Eomer...so bloody obvious...
And the reason neither of us have heard of Kettle of Fish is that he hasn't been here since before the Barrow-Downs used a vBulletin Board. Only old fogeys like Squatter have ever heard of him... EDIT: Oh wait, you're an old fogey too...

Last activity 1970? A signature which I cannot fathom without a dictionary (Squatter hallmark)? I sense trickery!
Seriously though, that was one of the more enjoyable questions on this thread. Most of the time someone gets the answer within a few hours.

Ah well, on to more adventures with the member's list! Serpent...Hmmm. |

Well I could if that would make you happy.... but it would be a big, fat lie....
Gil this has nothing to do with Avvies it is just a (I hope) fairly straight forward cryptic clue which will let you construct the Downers name.

Time for a clue? If you work out what "ash" is the rest should be easy. Americans may be at a disadvantage and anyone who knows why menzies is pronounced mingies may have an advantage......

Nah, not Maths, Greek...
Digamma is the reason lots of really really ancient Minoan Greek words end in inthos. I forget exactly how or why. It's pronounced something like a w. Now I'm crawling back into the linguistic waste whence I came. But I hope my yogh contribution is of some help to a sharper aftercomer...

A winner
You are right though the rest of the clue was intended differently.
æ is indeed called ash and is just the most beautiful letter to my mind..like a little flower. So we have ae Lissom means much the same as lithe and the initial letter of serpent is s aelithes indeed. Your go Morsul. Oh Cailin - I am so sorry - I was on a library computer yesterday and somehow I didn't see your response else I would have acknowledged it ....... So while I guess Morsul has the turn you get a lot of Kudos

As Gandalf, greatest of Istar, wisest of the Maiar, once said, 'Yes.'
Take the thread, Anguirel.
