They all had at one time or another a sword that was made in Gondolin and glowed in the presence of Orcs.

Wild guess: they all made a perilous journey that involved braving a narrow dangerous pass:
Gandalf: Caradhras (or the Bridge of Khazad-Dum, for that matter!) Samwise: Cirith Ungol Thorin: The secret entrance to Erebor Turgon: The Helcaraxë upon crossing to ME with the Host of Fingolfin [ July 24, 2003: Message edited by: Lyta_Underhill ]

The World's Tallest Hobbit has it! They all at one time wielded a blade forged in Gondolin.
Pray proceed, Lindol.

Could we add Aragorn to this list?
Is the one thing in common that they all had foster/adoptive fathers?

Oh Lindolirian! I just thought you omitted Aragorn to put us off the scent. Really. 'Cause it almost worked.
I'm amazed that I got the answer; I haven't read The Silmarillion yet - other than the Index & Appendices. But I had just started reading Unfinished Tales - and so Tuor's childhood was fresh in my mind. So…my turn, huh? I started to check the thread to prevent duplicating something already here, but 14 pages are too many. I doubt this one has been done. § Pippin § Pippin, again § Boromir § Glorfindel § Wormtongue § Gandalf § Ingold (not explicit in the text; I've just inferred this) An addition to the list: § Denethor (he could be on the list twice, too.) Need a hint? Just ask. [ August 15, 2003: Message edited by: Lostgaeriel ] [ August 15, 2003: Message edited by: Lostgaeriel ] Another addition: § The Watcher in the Water [ August 19, 2003: Message edited by: Lostgaeriel ]

OK. I'll clean up that list and give you a hint.
§ Gandalf § Glorfindel § Boromir § The Watcher in the Water § Pippin § Wormtongue § Pippin, again § Ingold (not explicit in the text; I've just inferred this) § Denethor § Denethor (same character, another instance) Since two of these characters from tLotR are listed twice, you should deduce that there is some common action among them. The actions and objects that are acted upon have something in common. Think generally, not specifically. Hint: I've listed them chronologically.

hmmm... was it that they all performed a sudden, angry, flared-up action at one (or two) points?

OK. Here are some hints.
Gwaihir the Windlord: Although at least 3 of the characters acted rather calmly, thoughtfully and deliberately, get a scrap of paper and jot down some specifics about these "various sudden, angry, flared-up action"s you're thinking of. You may see a type of OBJECT in common. [Subject verb object.] Gil-Galad: Sorry, orcs don't figure in any of the actions. OK, in one case, orcs show up in the story as a result of the action. Cinderella: A hint to you from you... Quote:
HINT: If you consider Caradhras a character, it could be added to the list. The object(s) acted upon have more in common than the actions (verbs). The fact that Pippin and Denethor are each listed twice should be a big clue. [ August 20, 2003: Message edited by: Lostgaeriel ]

I haven't written anything down =], but I've thought of something: was it that they all attacked/actively opposed at some stage a bearer of a Ring of Power? Denethor might not fit this, though, unless you want to count Sauron.

No, Gwaihir the Windlord, that's not it.
Remember, I re-listed the occurances (all from tLotR) chronlogogically. Shall I give you the dates? * October 3 * October 11 * December 13 * December 13 * December 13? 14? * March 5 * March 5 * March 9 * March 15 * March 15 Don't think of a particular object. Think of a general type of object. I'll let you figure out if it's animal, vegetable or mineral. Ooh! Telchar posted while I was writing this lenghty bit of dribble. He's pretty much got it. Stones are absolutely involved - just not always thrown. [ August 21, 2003: Message edited by: Lostgaeriel ]

Hi Telchar!
Would you like to elaborate? You've pretty much got it. The stones weren't always thrown, that's all.

Is it, more generally, that they handled a stone? Pippin dropped a stone into the well in Moria, Denethor handled the Palantir, until Wormtongue hurled it at Gandalf, Glorfindel left the beryl on the last bridge, etc.
The Watcher in the Water was awakened by a stone thrown by Boromir.

I thought about stones, too, but I can't think of any stone incident involving Gandalf - at least not at the date that you mentioned. (OCt 3) ?

Gandalf - left that stone on which he wrote G III on Weathertop on Oct 3 for the hobbits and Aragorn to see
Glorfindel left a similar token (the beryl stone) at the Mitheithel bridge Boromir threw a stone in the lake in front of the Moria gates- which awoke the watcher in the water Pippin threw a stone in the well in Moria thus alerting the Balrog and the Orcs Wormtongue throws the Palantir from Saruman's tower which is caught by Pippin, who later looks in it Ingold - hmm, I guess he was repairing the stone wall when Gandalf and Pippin met him, so he was definitely handling stones too Denethor looks into the Palantir for news on March 15 and then burns himself with it.

Good work, Evisse. I forgot about the rock left on Weathertop by Gandalf -- the one that Aragorn later looks at and opines "This has been handled recently." I always found that funny.

Thanks, Turambar. But you had the 'handling' idea - so it was you who basically solved it.

Heck no - it was Telchar who came up with the stone idea; he should ask the mext question. Especially since Lostgaerial hasn't said that handling a stone is right. Might be left (or was left) a stone.

Well I couldnt connect to bd yesterday after I had the stone impusle - but I did write my answer in full as lost.... asked for ;o)
Hmmm as I see it its all about stones ... more or less... - Gandalf - scrabs his initials on a stone on weathertop - Glorfindel - leaves a jewel as a token - Boromir - throws a stone in the dam because it disgusts him - The Watcher in the Water - piles stones againts the Hollin Gate - Pippin - throws a stone in the well in Moria - Wormtongue - spits on a stoneflag in the court of Edoras, and later throws a stone at /saruman/gandalf - Pippin, again - this time steals and looks in a stone - Ingold - is when he meets Gandalf and Pippin, doing some masonry on Rammas Echor - stone working - Denethor mentions (for though the stones be lost....) and use a stone - Denethor - later chooses to burn himself holding a stone in his hand.... - I probably dont have them all correct ... but these are what springs to mind. you could also have included: that BILBO put a green stone in his verse in Rivendell; That Boromir wore a single white stone in his collar; that Galadriel gave Aragorn a stone; Gimli helpes Gamling with some stonework; That Aragorn use/looked in the orthanc stone.... there are probably many others.

Well I really really hope that the above is acceptable because here is a new question:
Halbarad Eomer Aragorn Merry Theoden Bilbo Its fairly easy, but if you need hints some 4 to 5 names could be added to the above.

They were all givers of gifts:
Halbarad presents Aragorn with the royal banner, Eomer gives horses to Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli when they first meet, Aragorn gives Faramir the land of Ithilien, Merry offers Saruman some of his pipeweed when they meet him on the way home, Theoden gives Gandalf Shadowfax, Bilbo gives Frodo Bag End, and of course, an accursed ring. Well? Probably I'm miles away from the true answer, as usual...

Sorry, thats not it either. Instead of direct hints I'll just add a name or two to the list for each wrong guess.
