I think this thread has been forgotten! As Evisse has given up the turn, it is Mariska or Samwise's turn. I think.

I haven't forgotten about this, I just find it very hard to come up with something. I will try to think about it today, and post a new one
Oh, I can't come up with a decent one, anyone can go [ September 10, 2003: Message edited by: Mariska Greenleaf ]

OK, I'll do one.
The ghost of Sir Mungo Lip haunted a great many buildings in its time. Palaces, hotels, bars, MI5 headquarters... But his favourite by far was a place in Minsk, in Bar Klinski. The smoky atmosphere, the local gang of thugs, led by Denting Sam, a large, rather bulky character, appealed to Sir Mungo. At Leaf Brew's smell (Leaf Brew was the local beer) Mungo abandoned all his knightly dignity, and began to zoom round the small, dimly lit chamber and singing at the top of his ghoulish voice, "Whether you're here, far away, come to Bar Klinski , wahey! A piece of ham a day keeps the mad cows away! MUAHAHAHAHAHA!", and other such nonsense. In the end, when the bar began losing business, Andy Manfridski, the owner, was forced to show Sir Mungo the peeling, half broken off door. There are seven words, not related (except for being in LotR), that I know of in there. Enjoy!

All the phonetic ones are wrong, because there are no "sounds like" words in there.
The only right answers so far are: Oliphaunt, Goatleaf, Hama and Sandyman. Three to go!

Sorry, LePetit, but this thread needs to be closed, as it's getting too long.
I'd be grateful if you would open a new thread with the rules for the game, your current question and the correct answers given so far, in order that the game may continue. Thanks.

Words in Words II
Right-o, to start a new thread of this positively delightful game, I'd bes begin with a summary of the rules:
Basically, you conceal one (or several, for the enthusiast) JRRT- related word(s) in a sentence. If its several, usually the sentence is more like a paragraph. The simplest is a plain sentence: Oh no! That huge dinosaur only has one eye! which contains sauron (dinosaur only. More difficult is the set of linked words: They were mainly interested in sailing and boating. Being very cliquey, they were known as the cabal. Rogues, they were considered by the townsfolk. People used to shout at them "You are the Cabal! Rogues you are!" But, this simply went to show how intolerant the townsfolk had become. Which contains words linked by one of Legolas' many ingenious exclamations: "Ai! Ai!" wailed Legolas. "A Balrog! A Balrog is come!" The words are: ai x 2, a x2, Balrog x2 is and come. The most difficult of all is the set of random JRRT words, such as this one (which also happens to be the current puzzle, as set by me.): The ghost of Sir Mungo Lip haunted a great many buildings in its time. There are seven words to find, and the only right answers so far are: Oliphaunt, Goatleaf, Hama and Sandyman. Three to go! Good luck to "veteran" and new players alike!

Mungo Lip contains Ungol, perhaps.
Denting has Enting in it... Aha- found another one: Minsk, in Bar Klinski just happens to contain Skinbark, who is one of the oldest Ents. Almost missed that one, I did. Fea Edit: Sorry Saucepan, pure dumb luck that I found those two before you! [ September 16, 2003: Message edited by: Feanor of the Peredhil ]

Yup, skinbark and Enting are correct. I wasn't aware of Ungol, must've been subconscious. Extra point for that one, Fëanor!
So, there is only one left to find.

Whoo, I didn't see "ent" in there either!
Sorry for not saying this earlier, but phonetic ("sounds like") words aren't allowed. This just makes it more difficult and partially defeats the point of the game. Still one to go.

Nope as in all of the above phonetics are wrong, or nope as in no hints? Hint me here... I'm a very busy (over-achieving) person right now... *sniff* I'm getting upset that I can't find the last one!!!

I'm sorry to say that I've forgotten what the other one is!
So, the person who got the most can go, and that would be...ah, Horse Maiden and Feanor are tied (if one counts the extra point). So any of you can go.

All right... I'm a little busy at the moment (ie: very stressed from my over-achieving schedule) but I'll make one anyhow. I'm just going to do it for the sake of the creativity, but if Horse-Maiden has one before me, then by all means let her go. Cheers. I'll come back tomorrowish.

Although it is tempting to post multiple paragraphs containing numerous "words in words" (and I believe that I must share the responsibity for this, having started the trend), it would not go amiss to intersperse the thread with more short single "word in word" puzzles.
That is the next one, by the way. There is one word to find ... ... and no phonetics.

Rufus' post has been deleted. Any repeat of such idiocy will be suitably dealt with.
Anne, you get a bonus point, because Oin was not the intended answer. There is still another word in there to find.

OK, I think it's Hareth.
However it was only through Horse Maiden that I got it, so if I am correct maybe she should go next because she was nearly there. |

There are two to be found. It's dead easy.
"I never seem to have luck with my cars. Two years ago I bought a new Peugeot 306, thinking it would last years, be cheap to run and maintain. But I was wrong. The other day I started it up and had barely gone five miles when an ominous smoke started seeping from under the bonnet, followed by a loud bang. After being towed to a garage, I was told the engine had overheated causing a piston to expand and the engine to seize. This required an(expensive)engine rebore and rebuild with new parts. Rather than pay to have it fixed, I decided I'm going to search for a another car. Can anyone recommend something more reliable?" |
