In general when I post an 'odd man out' the four others usually have something in common like they all had or was something or had done, tried or suffered something that the odd man out hadn't - that is there is a connection between the four that the fifth lack. Exsample:
Gloin Durin VI Telchar Thrain Nain Wrong answers could be: Durin is the only one that is named Durin (kidding to make a point) or Telchar is the only one that made a knife used by Beren. See that doesnt make any connection between the other 4 besides the obvious fact that Beren only used Angrist or that the others obviously wasnt named Durin. Right answer would or course be that: Telchar wasnt of Durins line or more precise that: Telchar wasnt King of Durins House. Then you go: NEITHER WAS GLOIN - and this is the trick part of the question (which is always a nice feature to add I think) Yes he was... check the family tree. So obviously Luthien batteling Morgoth or holding a Silmaril is not the correct answer. Cheers T

A right answer could be either something the odd man either does or does not have in common with the others. Read the rules on the first page, you'll see.

I merely tried to explain that there was at least an atempt of wit when I asked a question - and secondly I know the rules - I was the one that started the idea of 'odd-man-outs' at the Barrow Downs Susan.

It could have Turambar but resquing would be very specific - go on.

Well, Luthien rescued Beren from Tol-in-Gaurhoth; Hurin rescued Turgon at the Nirnaeth (I think); Samwise rescued Frodo from the Tower of Cirith Ungol; and Gandalf rescued . . . uhh . . . Frodo and Sam from Mount Doom ?? That would make Aragorn the Odd Man Out ? Is this even close ?
Your hint seems to suggest a specific kind of rescuing -- I'll give this some more thought. [ October 08, 2002: Message edited by: Turambar ]

Well if it was Frodo instead of Sam, I wd say that Aragorn is the OMO because the other were all imprisoned in a high place:
Hurin - Thangorodrim Gandalf - Orthanc Luthien - Hirilorn Frodo - Tower of Cirith Ungol But Sam wasn't really imprisoned in the Tower. And I'm not aware of Aragorn being imprisoned. So I'm stuck . . . [ October 09, 2002: Message edited by: Turambar ]

Turambar I think you should go on - this have gone long enough - and you were first close and secon found a really good answer, which btw was part correct - Aragorn is the OMO - but what I had in mind was that the other four was rescued by eagles or were airborne by eagles and Aragorn never was
Please proceed [ October 09, 2002: Message edited by: Telchar ]

Gandalf
Elrond Goldberry Galadriel Aragorn All but one did something in LotR. What they did was not remarkable or unusual, but the Odd Man Out never did it in the book.

All of them let guests (the fellowship) stay in their home except Gandalf. And Aragorn did too, when he became king, he let them stay.

That;s not it, Lothiriel, but it's that kind of ordinary thing I had in mind. The OMO is never specifically described as doing this (I believe).

Again -- good guess, but not it.
HINT: Tom Bombadil could DEFINITELY be added to the list ! So could almost any hobbit, certainly Frodo, Bilbo, Sam and Pippin. [ October 21, 2002: Message edited by: Turambar ]

Correct, Susan. Or at least, LotR does not describe him doing so.

Easy: Arwen's the only one who never bore a Ring of Power.
Edit: OR, Arwen is the only one who never passed over Sea. Which, if one of these are right, were you going for? [ November 12, 2002: Message edited by: Eruhen ]

Yes, it was the passing over sea thing I was after, although I would admittedly have given it to either. Proceed.

Ok, I'll take a long shot and say Pippin. He was the only one not related to any of the other characters mentioned. Very unlikely explanation though...

Perhaps you meant Sam, arent Frodo and Pippin cousins? At least distant cousins?
My pitiful attempt, Elrohir is the only one who has magical powers. Ican't think anything better than whats already posted.

You're right Gwaihir when you say it is Pippin but I want an explanation with it. I'm gonna tell you because I'm not sure if this is right. Pippin was the only one whose mother waasn't mentioned. Tell me if I'm wrong though.
