Ok, sorry about the wait. This one shouldn't be too hard; look for the phrase.
You should do it soon -- the lists are growing as we speak. Only a little longer and we would be pulled under finitely; there would be no hope for us if we fell as low as the others have, we could not sustain ourselves. In the fullness of time -- a few months, it should take -- we, were we done in it, we shall again come to dominate the industry in this corner of the world. And then afterwards. Think of it! All you could ever need... so do it now, and there is a better than likely chance that this will happen. [ August 17, 2003: Message edited by: Gwaihir the Windlord ] |

Ah my good Windlord, pray forgive me, but I am drawing a blank. Could you perchance give me a clue (preferably which book it's in)? I'd be deeply indebted.

It's in the Hobbit. The words (sometimes split) from a particular well-known quote are strung accross the passage (which itself is cryptically related to the quote, although with hindsight this probably isn't going to give anything much away ).

Bad luck. Since this is difficult, I'll give another clue each day until someone gets it, today's being that the quote is sometimes to be seen to the upper of the screen in the barrowdowns.

How well known is this stupid blasted quote? Actually, forgive my whining. But how long of a quote is it? Short, medium, long? Am I looking for some seven word quote like "what have I got in my pocket?"?, or is it absurdly simple like "Thag you very buch."? (however I can't find either!!!!!)

Damn, it was worth an experiment, but no-one is going to get it. =/ I'm not even sure if the entire quote was in there... too, too hard, I'm afraid.
It was the end quote of Gandalf's ('You are a fine fellow, Mister Baggins....'), if you want to look for it. In the meantime, look for the one Middle-Earth/Aman geography word (due to my being in disgrace for posting an unanswerable question, I'm limiting myself :rolleyes , with the phonetics not entirely correct and split among juxtaposed words, in this passage: 'Have a care, Mister Thornton! That crack nearly deafened me....' |

Ah, you may as well have it. It wasn't that good anyway; I was looking for 'h[b]ave a car[b]e' (Avathar), but that was probably rather obscure as well. I'll promise to stop doing it in future. Ask away.

If you go for the phonetical approach, you can get Aredhel , but I guess that's stretching things a bit, isn't it?

I suppose my sense of humor is getting a little screwed up, but Ea was the location! As for the others, Aredhel, Melkor, and Haldir are correctomundo. Whomever so desires (that answered correctly) may continue.

Hmm, I'll give it a try. Although, this is my first time and it will probably be very easy. There are four words in the paragraph. Three are there in physical form but one is just the sound of the word.
Fearing the worst, Norman went to the police, who began to shadow his every move. He faxed them a copy of the documents so that they could see the problem. Unfortunately, a pair of silly cops broke the machine, and Norman knew with a kindling fire of anger that he was in trouble.

I got Manwe, Fangorn and Shadowfax.
As for the sound of the word - no idea - maybe "Ai" as in "ai, ai, a balrog"? nah, didn't think so...

Fangorn is in there? Wow. Sorry, but Fangorn and "Ai" are not the ones I was looking for. The last two words are people. Manwe and Shadowfax are correct, though.

Yeah, Fangorn was a bit stretched - I thought it sounded like it "fire of anger".
The other person is Feanor - but I still have no idea about the 'sound' one.

Yes, Feanor is correct. Keep guessing about the sound of the word, though!

It seems to me that, with all this use of phonetics and split words, this game is becoming rather overly complicated. The odd varation on the theme is OK, but might I suggest that, for the time being, we return to using correctly spelled and complete words in words?

Mr. Saucepan is correct. But seeing as how Evisse got most of the words, I think I shall let her have a go at it.

Both of you are correct - except ea, that is. Ea was not one I thought of.

Turambar - yes, the word is fea. Nice going!
Samwise - no, it's much more simple than that! The key word to look into is 'columbine' though!

Exactly, Horse-maiden! My declare my riddle officially solved!
I believe it was Samwise who got most of the words - so I'll invite her to make up the next one! Edit: Hold on, no - it's a tie between Samwise and Turambar. I don't know what the rules are in this situation, but I suppose the first who thinks of one should post it. [ August 23, 2003: Message edited by: Evisse the Blue ]
