<img src="http://www.barrowdowns.com/images/posticons/redeye.jpg" align=absmiddle> Happened?

I'm not sure if you are asking about a given insident. What stands out in my mind after reading the trilogy was that Frodo could see the &quot;fireworks&quot; of Gandalf on weathertop while still at a distance.

They did not dare take the road, so it was slow travel.

Did they come across Bilbo's Trolls before weathertop?

Weathertop was the Tallest of the Weather Hills, on which the ruins of a tower stood. From that hill one could see for miles around!

...he heard Theodred's great voice cry "To me, Eorlingas!"</p>

Of old it was the Tower of Amon Sûl, where the largest of the Northern Palantiri were situated. The tower was taken by joined forces of Angmar and Rhudaur in TA 1409 in the battle Arveleg I was killed.

Unfortunately we never hear about the Forsaken Inn as they are busy with Strider's 'longcut'.

I imagine Bilbo stayed at Bree and the Forsaken Inn but we never hear of it . I imagine if JRRT had rewritten the Hobbit as he contemplated we might have seen glimpses or more of the desolate lands between.

They came across Bilbo's trolls after Weathertop... they came to the Trollshaws the same day they met up with Glorfindel.

1420! The origins of the Forsaken Inn

TH, 'Roast Mutton':
Quote:
At first they [Thorin's company] had passed through hobbit-lands, a wild respectable country inhabited by decent folk, with good roads, an inn or two, and now and then a dwarf or a farmer ambling by on business.
Maybe these two inns became the Prancing Pony and the Forsaken Inn?

RS, 'A Long-expected Party', the Professor's jottings:
Quote:
They [Bilbo and his three Took nephews Odo, Frodo and Drogo] walk all night – East. Adventures: troll-like: witch-house on way to Rivendell.
Or then again, maybe the witch-house was perhaps the germ of what would become the Forsaken Inn.
