Tolkien How will the Balrog look?

This conversation has been dealt with extensively in another thread Mr Balrog , but in the end it all comes down to how the creators think it will look like. A slim majority seem to think it will be big with wings so I'd go that way, not being certain either way any more. The discussion has just made me less certain of my convictions in that area. They might go with the cartoon version's depiction, but whichever way they go it will look abnsolutely wicked!
[ October 02, 2001: Message edited by: Halbarad ]

Well, Im not completely sure, but in the new trailer the Balrogs foot is shown. It basically is a huge mass of fire. I think the balrog in the movie will have wings though - in one form or another. Tolkien didnt say "And his wings spread from wall to wall" for nothing. Even if the wings werent part of his body, that doesnt mean that there wasnt a shadow/fire that extended from his body that didnt LOOK like wings.
So, in my opinion, yes!

You should be able to rent the cartoon movie of the first half of the LOTR at your local video shop. It's not that good though- it is comparable with a snaga as far as I'm concerned, but it's something. There's also the book of the cartoon movie- my local library has it so there's a chance yours does too. To start you off on your quest for knowledge try the 'Of Bombadillos and Balrogs' thread in Books II
[ October 03, 2001: Message edited by: Halbarad ]

I think it would be a bad idea giving the Balrog wings in the movie. People will see the wings and then when it falls will be wondering why the hell it didn't just fly away. It would just make more sense to the people who need to see the movie because books are boring.

I saw the latest trailer last night and it set me thinking about how they'll show the Balrog and Gandalf's fall down the chasm is the Balrog is given wings in the film.
Maybe the foot's just an example of what to come - maybe the producers couldn't decide whether to give the Balrog wings or not so in the end they decided to just show its foot

Maybe Gandalf clips his wings with Glamdring!

F.Y.I. "Flame of Udun" is the preferred dipping sauce for a platter of Hot & Spicy balrog wings.

mmmm, TASTEY! The only thing that could compare to Flaming Hot Balrog wings would have to be Misty Mountain Oysters.
