The Characters
If you have seen Pictures of the characters, then you might feel the same way I do. I have always pictured the characters as Micheal Herring drew them on the cover of the Ballantine Books version of LOTR and The Hobbit. Here is an example Picture of how he drew Bilbo and Gollum:

www.coldal.org.uk/images/bilbo1.jpg

I would get more Pics of the book covers Im talking about, but I cant seem to find any on the Internet. They are really realllyyyy excellent Pictures and I think they are the way the characters should look. I realize there is going to be a difference in real life, but the way Aragorn looks in the movie, to me, looks really bad. I was just wondering if you guys felt the same way.

P.S. The thing that is weirdest to me is the way Orcs look in the movie. I have always imagined them as something like this:

www.blizzard.com/images/war3/wallpaper/thrall-preview.jpg

Edited by: GandaIf The White at: 7/2/01 1:44:20 am

I have those paperback Ballantine Books, Hobbit & LotR, and to tell you the truth, I don't like the covers at all! Legolas looks like Barry Manilow! Aragorn is okay, but he's way too clean cut. Maybe that's how he should look at the end when he's crowned, but he is supposed to be pretty scruffy prior to that. The Unfinished Tales one is pretty bad too, some creepy hooded guy and a wolf/dog. The Silmarilion cover depicting the downfall of Numenor, however, is outstanding! Anyway, this is just MY humble opinion on those books.
-amyrlis
These are indeed strange days. Dreams and legends spring to life out of the grass. -Eomer

Yes, I know I shouldnt make judgements yet, but I always imagined Aragorn looking king-like in a certain sort of way, even in the beginning of the story when he met the Hobbits.

But, I will forgive all, even Tom, if they have nice Battles Scenes!

The top one of Bilbo and Gollum are. The bottom one is a Pic of an orc from Warcraft 3. which is a very nice computer game Im going to buy when it comes out in December. Micheal Herring's art is the best.
"Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement.
Characters

There were no pictures on the books in 1973 when I first read LOTR. I pictured Aragorn as a bit like Robert Mitchum. Rough looking, but could straighten up and look royal when needed. It was younger men like Eomer and Faramir that might look more like Tom Sellek or Richard Chamberlain.

Bilbo seemed more like Micky Rooney, and Frodo like Davy Jones.

Orcs just seemed like big, crude line-backers

I invented my LOTR characters looks(even before the pictures came out),Frodo is the only one who comes even close to an actor in my mind the rest I invented.(I invented Frodo too it's just chance that he had to look like Elijah Wood).
Sam
Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons.
Re: Character actors

Am reading the Fellowship again right now. I have not read the book for about 5 years. I am discovering that all the old images that I had of the characters is being replaced by the images of the actors for the new movie.
I am not altogether bothered by this. I believe if the actor has a slight resemblance to the character for the books, then his or her acting will fill in the rest to complete the character role.
I will be disappointed if the acting in the movie sucks. The images of the characters will be stuck there, and will kind of ruin future readings.

Heh. I was already aware of the cross-dressing. I AM the movie-scout, after all. It is my JOB to know. Suffice it to say, MY Elrond is no cross-dresser.

I think that overall there was excellent casting.. from the looks of them, they couldnt have picked better actors for characters like Gandalf, Theoden, Gimili, etc. But for some of the other actors, like Elrond and Arwen.. I have my doubts to say the least.
"Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement.

Hey, Elves are supposed to be the most beautiful creatures in Middle Earth, right?
I actually always saw Elrond as kind of scruffy looking as he was a Half-Elf, not as nice as his peers. Liv Tyler is by far the worst casting of the whole film. What amazes me is the great casting job for all the secondary characters.
Brad Dourif is going to steal the show as Grima!
Cheers,
Valros

err... I just had to see what Elrond looked like after hearing all that about him, and I agree, he's nothing like I imagined. I imagined a younger face, more handsome and elven.

It seems EVERY post I see has someone knocking Liv Tyler. I don't know anything about her, what's wrong with her? She looks similar to what I imagined, but I thought she'd be a little older.

And Aragorn's nothing like I imagined. I thought he would be older and more mysterious, without the beard and with dark hair. But if Viggo Mortensen is a good actor and can portray the mystery and lordliness of Aragorn, I won't complain.

Overall I think the best casting is Legolas (exactly what I imagined!), Gimli, Gandalf, and the hobbits are okay except I think Frodo should be older and a little more mature looking.
"Half-grown hobbits, the hole-dwellers" "and as hungry as hunters, The Hobbit Children, the laughing folk, the little people"

Orcs

I for one think the orcs looks EXCELLENT. Not exactly how I pictured them when I first read the books, this was mostly because I saw the animated Hobbit before I read them. But I think they look really evil and nasty. I love the side-view of the one orc thats in the trailer with pointy-ears I think it really captures that the orcs are in fact twisted elves made and bred by Morgoth.

Durin's Bane

John Rhys Davies plays Gimli. One thing I think they did wisely was to pick unknown actors for the cast so that we would be suprised when we saw them for the first time. I'm really looking foward to how the hobbits sound. I think they might've done a better job with Elrond and Merry but other'n that it's a perfect cast, especially Wood and Taylor whoa instant matches.
Pippin

I am for the most part happy with the casting. I was very worried about Sean Astin, but from what I have seen I think he will do a good job... Sam is the heart of the books.
I like Liv Tyler... with good direction I think she will do fine. Boromir is the only Character that does not fit my image... he should be much bigger and more doughty... SP?
Frodo... and the other Hobbits are perfect... exactly as I imagined and Ian's Gandalf is without exception one of the best casting decisions as was Legolas!
As to Hugo Weaving as Elrond? I will have to wait and see... His performances in both Percilla and the Matrix were excellent. As an actor and a person he gets high marks from me!

I don't like the casting of Miranda Otto as eowyn, I think that she is too old for the part and doesn't have that cold beauty. Liv Tyler is a pretty gal but she can't act. French actrice, Audrey Tautou, http://tautou.online.fr/poster1.jpg. would look wonderfull as Arwen.
Cate Blanchett is perfect for the role of Galadriel.
[ November 25, 2001: Message edited by: shieldmaiden ]
