Galpsi was the first to notice that we now have over 5000 posts on this board! 5000 posts!??? Wow! We sure do talk a lot. Imagine 5000 posts on one ezboard. And we're just getting started. Congrats, galpsi, and all members of this board that have made it a success.

I truly believe we have the best Tolkien discussion forum around. A great mix of new readers and learned experts, and everyone discussing things peacefully and in a mature manner. The fact that we have 5000 conflict-free posts speak volumes about the quality of this board. (alright, there were about 10 heated WWII posts, but they didn't get out of control )

To everyone, thanks!

This board started out in May 2000 with me all alone. I coaxed burrahobbit into joining, and for a while it was the RKittle / burrahobbit forum. But soon other's started arriving: Balin999, galadriel2, BilboFrodo, Sharku, Gondolin and Galpsi were here by June. Along the way we picked up more regulars: quam, bmilder, Taimar, Gwaihir, lindil, Mithadan, Sulduledhel, Gamegie, and many more.

Let's see if I can characterize some of our members in no particular order.

Burrahobbit – This guy is the reason the board kept going. I’m serious. For a while it was just him and me. We were stuck at 18 members for about 2 weeks straight and burrahobbit put out a strong-worded post that seemd to motivate old and new users. Burrahobbit has a great knoweldge of Tolkien. And when you consider he just started reading the books this year, wow!!

Galpsi – Our resident professor and Barrow-Wight attitude adjustor. Galpsi came storming into the board with a barage of well worded, tricky questions that really re-ignited interest in the Quiz Room and the entire board. He makes great conversation and really, really hard quizes!

Gwaihir – The Lord of Eagles looks down from his lofty Eyrie, occasionally pouncing on unspecting members with questions, comments, and opinions. That’s why we love him! Gwaihir also writes some excellent quizes, too.

Lindil – Will Re-Write Silmarillion For Food. The sponsor of the New Silmarillion Project, lindil is a very Tolkien-educated scholar and very active in The Books section of our forum.

Dogtrot – Oh where oh where has my little Dogtrot gone. Forced to abandon his Montana ‘spead’, Dogtrot is a favorite at the Downs. We all desperately await the next Folly Furfoot fanfic installment.

Taimar – Another Tolkien-Scholar, Taimar has supplied us with great Quiz Room questions and realy hard quizes. Watch out for him in the chat room. Fastest typer in Arda!

Sharku – One of our two regulars from Deutchland, Sharku speak more better English than me do. How he do dat? Sharku (aka Manuel Steiner) has contributed immensely to the board and the site with questions, quizes, articles, etc. etc. etc.

Balin999 – Our other German friend, Balin999 basically founded the board with burrahobbit and me. He just keeps coming back no matter how many times I move without leaving a forwarding address!

I’ve only mentioned a few of you. Sorry I couldn’t mention everyone but that would take all week to do it properly. I need to close this letter out with one more ‘thanks’ and encouragement to keep going strong and have fun!

Re: We've passed the 5000 mark!!!!

Congratulations Spirits! Wow, I had no idea that this board was anywhere near 5000 posts. A great effort from everyone on the downs! Keep things up like this for a bit longer and we'll soon reach 10,000...
