I believe he went to Gondor, if I remember correctly.

Yes, it was definitely the archives of Minas Tirith.

...which is naturally where the Account of Isildur was kept for thousands of years, although it didn't look to me like the librarian was doing a very good job of keeping things organized! The man with the torch who showed Gandalf the stone chamber with the records acted like it was a garbage heap and nobody had been there for decades! You'd think people would be more interested in the past.

This might be a stretch but I believe the attitude of the librarian (and the Steward in the books) was one more of "we've already read everything and you're beginning to annoy us with your frequent requests to go through our old papers."

Yes, people certainly managed to get sick of Gandalf. (Stormcrow!) Too bad he got so little respect while he was the Grey. He certainly commanded some respect when he returned as the White in Edoras.

In the book, of course, he also hunts and then interegates Gollum which takes him to Mirkwood. The film Gandalf must do the same thing even though it isn't shown as he speaks of looking for the creature Gollum to Frodo upon his return. We have to assume he found him as he knows his story and that he was captured and tortured in Mordor.
The animated map that accompanies the special edition (which I think is really cool) only shows him going to Minas Tirith but his actual journey in the film must be all over hell's half-acre. I guess they didn't show this as it would have simply been too much, though it is interesting to note that the map does have him going to Edoras first, upon escaping Isengard. I guess that was something for the book readers.
H.C.

That was one part of FOTR that they took a large chunk out, and if you did not read the book you really don't know where he went. Even though in the book, I don't think we follow Gandalf to Gondor, I think he tells Frodo about it after he has been there.
[ January 31, 2003: Message edited by: Gorwingel ]

I don't believe we ever follow Gandalf in the books. Everything we learn about Gandalf on his own is after he returns and he's describing it.
H.C.
