Question Like Father like Son?

In the Extended edition of the Fellowship, after they are leaving the Green Dragon, One of the hobbits begins to woo Rosie. Now, is it just me, or is that the same hobbit to whom Frodo said "Cheers, Gaffer!"? If so, then does that mean both Sam AND Ham are after the same girl? Also, Frodo said "Don't worry, Rosie knows an idiot when she sees one", ergo insulted his chief gardener/bodyguard's father. Bad move, if you ask me.
So, am I just seeing things, or will we see another of PJ's famous "twists" in the story of RotK where Sam 'n' Ham fight over the same girl, to "sex it up a bit"?
[ January 26, 2003: Message edited by: LePetitChoux ]

I'm almost certain that wasn't who Frodo was saying "Cheers, Gaffer" to. He was saying that to the old guy at the end of the table. The woo-ful (and anti-foreigner) hobbit was Ted Sandyman, methinks. Which would explain the "idiot" remark.

Also, "Gaffer" is a generic term for an old person, sorta like "Pops" or "old-timer". So calling someone Gaffer doesn't mean that it was The Gaffer.

That would be really bad if they put that kind of mean twist in this story, so I doubt they would do that.

The old guy is the Gaffer. I think it's pretty clear as he is speaking as Frodo is sitting (I think). I'm pretty sure the other hobbit at the table (talking about all the queer folk around) is supposed to be Ted Sandyman. I think he might be the one hitting on Rosie.
H.C.

While we're on hobbit cameos, how about Farmer Maggot? I'm pretty sure that in the scene where the Black Rider is asking the hobbit with the dog, "Shire? Baggins?" that the person answering is supposed to be Farmer Maggot as he describes being questioned by a Black Rider to the hobbits in the book and he has dogs.
This scene was a pick-up after the main shoot but it always makes me laugh. In the book, Farmer Maggot informs Frodo and company that he told the Black Rider off. "You'll go back where you belong, double quick. I give you one minute before I call all my dogs." Now a hobbit saying this to a Nazgul who's mere sight makes others cower in fear is rather comical and I always figured this was largely tough talk that is pretty easy well after the fact and in front of a warm fire. So when in the movie when he says, "No Bagginses around here. They're up in Hobbiton" while he's backing through the door and you can all but see the pee stain spreading at his crotch, I think, "ah, now the truth comes out".
H.C.
