boromir with merry, and pippin
did anyone notice that boromir probobly got the closest with merry and pippin ?
i thought it was pretty cool. it seems like the whole time he always does stuff with them. like hes teaching then sword play, he jumps with them on the bridge of khazad dum, im not sure if he carries them on cahadros though, and at the end, after doing what he did to frodo, he realized that he had to do something, and he protected merry and pippin with his life.
this is prolly one of my favorite things about the movie.
did anyone else notice this, or fully grasp this ?

I am glad you brought this up, gayare'dion. I, too, noticed the bond between Merry, Pippin, and Boromir. It did seem that Boromir went out of his way to spend time and protect the two hobbits, more so than any other character.
Of course Frodo and Sam were close with Merry and Pip, but that goes without saying. Aragorn seemed to be closer to Frodo, Gandalf closer to Frodo, Gimli closer to Frodo [["You are full of surprises, Master Baggins!" and etc]]], Legolas was close to them all at the same level, except for Gimli, which the movie didn't portray.
It was very touching to see Boromir grow close to Merry and Pippin, because it helped enhance his character. Without the encounters between Boromir and the two hobbits, and without the random talks Boromir has with Aragorn, I bet the audience would have seriously disliked Boromir.
Thank goodness for that friendship, eh?

I think that you are reading way to much into this. I don't think that it was intended at all. Perhaps other people in the fellowship noticed that Boromir was starting to become focused on the ring, so they tryed not to let him be in charge of Frodo at any point in time. That might explain Caradhras. Or they might have just each grabbed 2 random hobbits both times. When Boromir protected Merry and Pippin from the orcs, he didn't know where Sam and Frodo were. It wouldn't make any sence to go running looking for them when Merry and Pippin were right there about to be killed by orcs.

I disagree, Arwen. That was one of the things I liked about the movie. In the book, Boromir was a bit cold and never very friendly to anyone (until the end, and that wasn't friendliness so much as necessary defense), but the screenwriters for the movie humanized him by showing a soft and playful side with Merry and Pippin. It was a different interpretation of the same material and I thought it was great.
[ September 16, 2002: Message edited by: Childlike Empress ]

I didn't like Boromir when I first read the books but I did started to like him after watching The Fellowship of the Ring because they humanized the character somewhat!
Also you have to applaud Sean Bean's portrayal of him as I believe how he played him had a lot to do with many of us starting to like Boromir for the first time!

I do think some people are harsh on Boromir. Sure he wasn't the nicest, friendliest, warmest character in the books but I never thought he was cold or inhuman.
And yeah, I noticed that link with Merry and Pippin. Kinda nice.

That's the one thing that I have to thank PJ for! Oh, and I bow to Sean Bean for taking the part and turning it into a tragedy worthy of Shakespeare.
If you read the books, as is stated in one of the abouve replies, you will note that Aragorn pays special attention to Frodo, being the one who needs the most guarding. Boromir is often behind, with the other Hobbits. PJ wrote into it a degree of familiarity between Boromir and Merry and Pippin that was not described in the books. Surely, this was to quickly illustrate their growing friendship. I am greatful for this!

I think the reason most people dislike Boromir in the book is basically cause of the fuss over the Ring. But I think that Boromir's problem, as illustrated by Faramir when he says "Alas, poor Boromir, it was too sore a trial for him!" was that he was a great warrior and did indeed seek a great weapon to defend his people. Not truly grasping the power and purpose of the Ring only increased his desire and hastened his fall. But Boromir was not an *evil* person by any means! He was noble and lordly, and as was written, he did not understand why the Stewards of Gondor would never become Kings no matter how many generations passed without one. He felt that he should be King after his father. He felt that the true Kings had abandoned their duty. I think learning of Aragorn's heritage only increased that bitterness at the abandonment of Gondor by the Kings.
It was indeed a sore trial for a leader such as Boromir to be confronted with the king who had would claimed his kingship, with a ring that could seemingly guarentee victory, with a quest whose most likely outcome would be only to return the ring to the enemy, and with elves counciling just that (Boromir seems to have a pointed distrust for elves).

Actually i think that in the movie they had ment to show Boromir and his relationship with Merry and Pippin. one reason is what Gandalf had said in TTT, Chapter The White Rider:
"...It was not in vain that the young hobbits came with us, if only for Boromir's sake..."
If Boromir had not had a close relationship with Merry and Pippin and had only cared about Frodo and The Ring, he wouldn't have risked his life to save them from the Orcs.
~LadyElbereth

It also may help to explain why Pippin and Merry so readily pledge their allegances to the Steward and King respectively.

quote:
It also may help to explain why Pippin and Merry so readily pledge their allegances to the Steward and King respectively.

Exactly!
I mean to be honest I never understood why Merry and Pippin held Boromir in such high regards until I watched the movie of FOTR...
But after seeing just how hard Boromir fought to try to save them, my views on him were changed. Aragorn spoke the truth when he said to a dying Boromir:
No Boromir. You fought bravely. You have kept your honor.
For he did indeed fight bravely and he was even repentant when he realized what he had almost done to Frodo to seize the Ring...
Yes, thanks to PJ and Sean Bean's interpetation of Boromir, I now see the character as I believe Tolkien meant for all of us to see him and for that I am grateful!

I thought that the part with Boromir teaching Merry and Pippin how to swordfight was the best part in the whole movie - it really put Boromir's character into a more positive light. That scene showed that Boromir wasn't this completely evil person. He was only human, complete with human strengths and weaknesses.

Well, I still don't like Boromir. Even though he did fight bravely for Merry and Pippin, everything else seems to be focused on getting the ring from Frodo. I think that the only reason that he fought for Merry and Pippin was to redeem himself somehow. I didn't like him in the books and the movie didn't make me like him any more. Part of what I don't like about him in the movie is that he takes so freaking long to die! Sorry, but I don't really like death sceans and they just dragged it out way to long. That is my opinion anyway.

I do see it, but are we not forgetting that they are not real people? In my opinion, its okay to call them names, they wont hear.
