Elen sila lumenn' omentielvo!
I know I already welcomed you here, like 5 times at school or something, and I already talked about this...but I have my book now. So I looked...because it was annoying me too...and it's NOT there! Sunday Times...ought to read the book before making a riddle. Varda Elentari

I don’t think that it does say whether or not he came from the Shire, but he lived near a river. I assume he lived near the Gladden Fields, which I believe are quite a way from the Shire. I would have to check the book, I haven't read LoTRs for a while.
Checked: No he lived in Wilderland, by the Great River (Query: Whats the name of that river in the LoTRs? Is it the one the Fellowship travel down in the elven boats? Or is that the River Running?), which is beyond the Misty Mountains in terms of the position of the shire. So no he didn't live in the Shire.

Yep its wrong. Hmm did Gollum ever even enter the shire? I dont think he did. Maybe he came from the Shire was a reference to the fact he was a hobbit, or sortofhobbitishl. Maybe they are just basing it on the Movie, where where he came from is ambigous.

Sam.
In the Appendices... Quote:
Although, I just noticed that it said RETURN to the West. In that case....since Frodo and Sam never CAME from the West...it would be..Gandalf or Galadriel, since they were the only ones originally from the West in the first place. But I think it was just the riddle that was messed up, and they mean Sam. Going to sue this paper. [ November 18, 2002: Message edited by: *Varda* ]

*looks at PMs* *sees nothing*
In any case, this is stupidly ambiguous, and it's driving me insane!

Who was the one who after the quest,
was the last of the ringbearers to return to the west?" The problem with this one being Return, since none of the ring bearers were ever in the west in the first place. "Who is the one who was born in the shire and followed the ring into the mountain of fire?" The problem being Followed the Ring, which is an obvious reference to Gollum. Thought thinking about it, Sam followed Frodo and thus the ring into the mountain of fire, or at least into a cave in the mountain. Are all these riddles supposed to refer to the same person? "Who is the one who, hidden from view, Heard what the fellowship first planned to do?" Sam, without a shadow of a doubt. I think.

"Who is the one who, hidden from view,
Heard what the fellowship first planned to do?" Perhaps the Ring itself? I know I'm stretching it a bit, but the Ring has its own 'personality' (after a fashion), at least that's the feeling I get from it...
