Oh, yes, he's an excellent sidekick. A fabulous minion. A first class underling.

(waves at the "Sam is the real hero of LOTR!!!" fanbase)

Interesting list. While I will give Robin, Chewbacca, and Dr. Watson their due, I fail to see how Ed McMahon, George Costanza, and Ethel Mertz outrank Sam. But maybe I'm just biased.

The one thing that sticks out though -- where is Tonto?!

1.) Ed McMahon
2.) Robin
3.) George Costanza
4.) Chewbacca
5.) Ethel Mertz
6.) Doctor Watson
7.) Samwise Gamgee
8.) Ed Norton
9.) Tatto
10.) Dwight Schrute
11.) Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger
12.) Donkey
13.) Robin Quivers
14.) Sancho Panza
15.) Andrew Ridgeley
16.) Wayne Smithers
17.) Willow Rosenberg
18.) Andy Richter
19.) Bernard P. Fife
20.) Turtle
21.) Gromit
22.) Pedro Sanchez
23.) Rhoda Morgenstern
24.) Goose
25.) Art Garfunkel
26.) The Supremes
27.) Hank Kingsley
28.) Falstaff
29.) Walter Sobchak
30.) Keith Rchards
31.) Garth Algar
32.) John Oates
33.) Leonard ''Lenny'' Kosnowski and Andrew ''Squiggy'' Squiggmann
34.) Barney Rubble
35.) Flo
36.) Ford Prefect
37.) Paul Schaffer
38.) Lane Kim
39.) Silent Bob

Maybe we should do a British version of this putting in the odd Dr Who sidekick and Baldrick, the fun part might be how far down the list we could put the gaff-ridden Duke of Edinburgh

White Tree

Depends upon what Robin we are talking about. If we are using the 1960's TV show Robin then I have no complaints. I mean just wearing that suit every day should be enough to have him in the top 5, let a lone his patented 'Holy Guacamole Batman.'

And personally Pedro Sanchez needs to be in the Top 20.

He was the best part of that movie.

But erm... oh yeah... Of course Sam should be first.

You bet your coney and taters Sam is the absolute NUMERO UNO sidekick of all time !!!! Indeed, I will also give the above their due, but PUH-LEEEEZE !!!
And yes, I most certainly am biased.

Gromit's on there...that's disappointing. I've firmly held onto the idea for a long time that Wallace, all unwitting, is actually the sidekick.

Well, you have Robin from Batman and Robin, Ethel Mertz is Lucy Ricardo's best friend from "I Love Lucy", and George Constanza is, I think, Jason Alexander's character on Seinfeld. Correct me if I'm wrong.Ed McMahon I don't know. I thought that was the publisher's clearinghouse sweepstakes guy.

I'm not THAT old, but if I'm thinking right, Ed McMahon was originally Johnny Carson's "Sidekick" on the Tonight show in the '50s. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

*SAM is still the greatest sidekick in all of the literary world...*

Actually, the 60's, 70's, 80's and, I think, just barely into the 90's. He was actually pretty good at it.

But he's no Sam. Sam's the best.
