We talking movie here? Then I'd say definitely not wood. I've seen it myself in the exhibit, albeit through a pane of glass the first time and five feet away the second (darn that rope barrier), so I can say metal, or something like it, some sort of plastic, that would stand up well to wear and tear.
It's supposed to be metal, no matter what it's really made of. It's supposed to look like iron, with the little glass orb set in the top.

i imageine a pearl or opal because Sarumon was the colorful wizard and these minerals have many colors in them.
