Peter Woodthorpe ( Gollum in BBC Radio and animated film)

I know there are a few other fans of the radio series out there and they may be interested (if saddened) to know that Peter Woodthorpe, who played Gollum so effectively, died on the 13th August aged 72 years. His obituary was on the (London) Daily Telegraph on Wednesday, and such was the extent of his stage and television work that this role did not rate a mention. Such is the nature of celebrity Woodthorpe was perhaps most familiar to the public in the minor role of the pathologist Max in "Inspector Morse" rather than as the "creator" of Aston in "The Caretaker" (Harold Pinter) and of Estragon in "Waiting for Godot" .

I never knew the fellow in any other role, but his Gollum was inspired.

HERE'S a nice little review of his acting career.

I was a fan of his in the Inspector Morse series.
