It DID have to do with Liv Tyler's physical self.

I don't know how to give anymore hints without totally giving it away....well....

It had to do with what I said above, and the way the other elves were dressed, according to the magazine article I have....

Was it something to do with the clothes they originally out in swamping her? So they simplified them so she wasn't so buried - therefore making her look more ethereal. I have just made this up so feel free to laugh.
