Yeah, I usually do that. Bread = Lembas, that's just the way it is.
We (my class) had our annual halloween dressing-up day today. And I was... Frodo! Maybe not the best Frodo ever, but I got to borrow my friend's cloak, and with a Sting-shaped wooden sword and the One Ring on a chain around my neck I think I did fairly well. I even made a Phial of Galadriel! An old plastic Fanta bottle with a plastic bag and some paper pieces inside, and then a flashlight to light it up. It looked pretty good in the dark. And then we had a voting, you had two votes per person. So out of 46 votes, I got one. One vote! Actually, I never expected to win anyway, it was just a fun thing.

Frodo costumes are cool. You woulda had my vote NightKnight.
Anyway... Just recently, my two cousins and I acted out a bunch of LotR scenes, not very well, mind you, but well enough. That, and I have spelling tests every week in my English class, so what I do to pass the unbelievable amount of time, I draw and write LotR stuff, like the songs of Merry and Pippin, riddles, and other various things. Hey, it's better than just sitting there being annoyed at the waste of time.

When I`m in English, my teacher will sometimes give us a word, and we have to put it in a sentence. All of my sentences end up being LotR related.

~You look to LotR for the solutions to all your problems.
What I do- I randomly choose which book I'm going to use, then close my eyes and open it at random, open my eyes, and read the first bit I see. I did this two days ago when something had happened to make me very depressed, and it opened to Sam saying "don't despair". See, it works!

And now on-topic- ~When you catch obscure lines from other movies that sound like lines from LotR

When you use LotR to aid in playing the game Taboo.
For those not familiar with the game, the idea is to get your teammates to say the word written on the card, by giving them hints without using certain words which are also on the card. Very tricksy sometimes. So, I was playing this game the other day and the word I had to guess was "fool." My boyfriend gave me the clue "Blank of a Took" and needless to say I got it right away. We still lost. |

When you come to work in a blazer, and realise it's the first time in about six months--well, no, really longer than that-- that you haven't dressed as either an elf or a hobbit; and then you find yourself thinking, "Frodo would have enjoyed a blazer like this if he had had the chance to buy one. Really, he'd look nice in it."
Then you look in the mirror, and belatedly realise that the elvish blue-and-white shell-necklace you are wearing clashes rather badly with Rae's Lorien leaf that is *still* hanging on the same chain as your cross, and you realise it has been there ever since you want to the LOTR exhibit... **a week ago**.

When you break up with a significant other for argueing with you over obvious points in The Silmarillion. They were under the impression that there was only ONE Minas Tirith! Well, then I guess Finrod's citadel was a shack on a rock.

Sounds like a Tolkien soap opera to me... all sorts of drama over speculations and Silmarillion facts. ie: Girl: I saw you with her! I saw you! You were whispering to her, and holding hands -- by God, you were speaking in Quenya to her! You only ever speak to me in Sindarin! Am I not good enough for High-Elven??? Guy: She just reminded me of Idril Celebrindal so! I couldn't help it -- you know you're the only one for me! Girl: I don't care! You're -- you're -- just as bad as Maedhros! Guy: You mean Maeglin. Girl: No! I meant what I said. Guy: Well, I think you meant Maeglin. Note I've still got both hands? Girl: You won't if you don't get out of here in five seconds! We're through! *slams door in his face* Hmmm.... that was weird. Last edited by Encaitare; 10-28-2004 at 06:21 PM. Reason: spelling |

You are up at 2 am packing to leave on a trip the next day, and, instead of going to sleep when you finish, you stop to leave a note on your rpg and look at the posts in Mirth!

For an English project on a famous dead person you choose JRRT. Actually, I'm really glad for the opportunity because I honestly don't know that much about him.

You are reading The Illiad and you begin to picture Achilles as Aragorn, though of course he would never retreat from battle over a stupid feud, and then, before you know it, you aren't even reading anymore, but daydreaming about when the War of the Ring. And then your teacher asks you a question, which you don't even truly hear, but you think that she is Sauron interrogating you through the Palantir and you curl up in a ball on the floor saying random things in elvish. And then you are taken to the counselor for psychiatric evaluation...and..well...need I go on? (not that that has ever happened to me before, but well, I kind of have an overactive imagination, but don't we all? )

*You are assigned to to a report on Newgrange, Ireland. You discover that Newgrange is a famous paleolithic structure featured in Celtic folklore, so you look up some info on the Celts. You read until you see a sentance containing the word "barrow." You get excited and forget all about Newgrange. Need I explain further?
You hear the song "Sister Disco" by the Who, and then you spend half an hour trying to re-work the song to become "Mister Disco," a spoofed modern rendition of an ode to a dead Gondorian... "I would choose Nasgul and cold darkened caves, Filled full of cave trolls and moldy dwarf graves, I would stand by you and comfort your soul, When you are broken and shot full of holes! "Goodbye, Mister Disco, Frodo has left you behind! Goodbye, now you're so low, You're like a big porcupine." Yeah.

~When you spend hours on the internet looking for a site that will let you listen to more than a thirty-second clip of "Bring Me the Disco King", and sing the first line (all I got to hear! Amazon.com needs better clips! The clip started from the very beginning, and it was mostly the intro) all day the next day, and ask people where they think the tune's from, because it sounded familiar to you. I swear I've heard that tune before!

You form a Fellowship at school with your friends (even though you are all female). You are chosen to be Frodo because of your One Ring that you are constantly wearing. When you move away, the sone Into the West is "dedicated" to you by your friends, because you are Frodo. You can`t watch RotK without breaking down at the end because of the memory of having to leave you friends, but watch it any way. You skip up and down the halls singing drinking songs, collecting weird looks. Nimrodel

When you, as a native Engish speaking American, can quote Gollum in various accents: French, German, Spanish... whatever. Now THAT is talent!

When you`re in the store looking for a birthday present for you little brother, and your mom asks how much something costs. You bend over to look and and reply, "Twelve ninety-six." And then with a sly grin add, "Very good year! Almost as old as I am!" Yes, my parents think I`m insane.

<-- Not quite Old Winyards, but kinda sorta maybe close enough
Quote:
Incidentally, the "bottles of the Old Winyards" would not be almost as old as Bilbo, were they from 1296, seeing as Bilbo was born in 2890... they'd be around 1594 years older than Bilbo... When I realized that it irritated me an obscene amount... I became unreasonably irate and began complaining to everyone within earshot that Peter Jackson had failed me. Fortunately, those within earshot were both LotR fans and no strangers to my madness, so I was not met with too much derision. |

Not wishing to be nitpicky, but perhaps Bilbo saying 'Almost as old as I am' is a form of self derision, as old people often say things like 'Two thousand years ago, when I was at school...' and stuff like that. At least that's what I assumed when I heard it, realised it was wrong, then thought about it for a bit...
Still that's just my opinion, I could be wrong... |

Encaitare, you're forgetting to subtract 1600 from the Third Age year to adapt it to Shire Reckoning. Bilbo was born 1290 S.R., which would be 2890 Third Age; the Old Winyards was actually only six years younger than he was.
