That's Bill Farney to the Hobbits, about Aragorn, when they are leaving Bree.

You are right, It was Bill Ferney. And it is spelled 'nought' in the book, by the way, which is a variation of 'naught' (at least in the worn out 1978 Ballantine paperback edition I have on my desk -- too lazy to go look through my hardbound editions atm).

*The Dark Elf bows*

I referred to two hardbound copies I have (one published by Allen and Unwin, and the other by HarperCollins), and each have the spelling as 'naught'. Only the Ballantine paperback version has the spelling as 'nought'. Someone did not do a proper proofreading job!

Anyway, the quote you offer is found here:

Quote:
"'Rope!' cried Sam, talking wildly to himself in his excitement and
relief. 'Well, if I don't deserve to be hung on the end of one as a
warning to numbskulls! You're nowt but a ninnyhammer, Sam Gamgee: that's
what the Gaffer said to me often enough, it being a word of his. Rope!''

Sorry about adding 'ninnyhammer'. Such a waste of a perfectly good insult.

Ninnyhammer would have been a simple one - who other than Sam would have said it?

Grishnakh to Merry and Pippin, at the edge of Fangorn.

"My dear tender little fools!" was the exact quote, but that would have given too much away. "Tender" was already enough to put me on the track.

You're right. As to the location, somewhere on the plains of Rohan should be enough since I am now far too sleepy to check the chapter or the chronology.
