OK I will try to make my notes coherent and share them.... In the mean time I suggest you take a look at the first page of this thread for the general set up and character bios.

You all don't have to wait for me! Start writing whenever you all want, and I'll catch up when I can.

Oh I didn't mean to make you feel under pressure to return! I will perhaps post at least to "tidy up" the twins a bit, and maybe the new players will be able to introduce their characters but I don't imagine we will get too far ahead of you!

I don't feel under pressure. I just wanted to stay that just because I'm the innkeeper, no one has to wait for me.

Thank you Mithalwen for allowing me and others to describe our characters. Gaurcrist is an elf, who is a scholar and has written books such as "The Evil of Sauron". Gaurcrist also would like to fight, but is restricted from this by his father.

Hi Gaurcrist! Oh goodness, I have no authority here, I am just hoping to encourage a little activity!
Folwren is the Innkeeper who is very helpful at integrating new arrivals and is responsible for moving time on and so on which is why I hope we will have her input once she has time - I wasn't a teacher for very long but I can't get out of the habit of being perhaps over concerned with peoples exams Need less to say I wasn't always so conscientious with my own... I'll stop fussing now Foley I promise! Since you are a new arrival to the downs as well as the Perch, I suggest you take a look at the first dozen posts at the beginning of the thread and get an idea of the set up. You will also find a full character description for your character which Piosenniel will link to with the others. This fuller description will help other characters to interact with yours more easily since they will know what you look like and if you come from the same place which may affect how they respond.. For example an elf from Rivendell is unlikely to be a complete stranger to another Rivendell elf - the community is too small and the lives are too long - they would be bound to know each other by sight at least, whereas two individuals from Rohan might easily be total strangers to each other.

I do not seem to be getting any response!
Mithalwen, I do not seem to be getting any response from Piosenniel about joining an RPG. Do you have any suggestions?

I forgot to submit a character description!
NAME: Norfast
AGE: 54 RACE: High Elf GENDER: Male WEAPONS: Steel long sword, longbow, leather armour APPEARANCE: "They were a race high and beautiful, the older Children of the world, and among them the Eldar were as Kings, who now are gone: the People of the Great Journey, the People of the Stars. They were tall, fair of skin and grey-eyed, though their locks were dark, save in the golden house of Finrod; and their voices had more melodies than any mortal voice that is now heard . . .” His hair colour is blond, his leg muscles well developed as well as his arms, though more-so on his right arm, and he has a strong torso. His clothing consists of common brown trousers and a white shirt. PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: Strong with bow, weak hand to hand, wise, good at talking, good at running. HISTORY: Has a father who is a hunter and a nomad, travelled with him. Last edited by Gaurcrist; 05-15-2009 at 10:41 AM. |

Guarcrist, I think what happens is that when someone starts a new RPG, those on the list are contacted. I don't know if any new ones are in the pipeline since the RPG forum has been quiet recently with mainly a few old games drawing slowly to a close. Pio is around but not necessarily on a daily basis - I am sure she will get in touch.
Maybe if we get the Inn thread revitalised new games will start. However you will need to post in the Golden Perch a bit before joining any new game. As for your profile, it isn't my call but the description seems to be the general guidlines for elves. I would suggest you need to be more specific and let us know what your elf looks like eg height, hair colour, colour of clothing maybe. Is he a high elf or silvan? thinking about this might help you develop the history a little.

Still going! Just waiting for someone to revive it.
Welcome to the Golden Perch, I hope your stay here is enjoyable, however long or brief it may end up being. I hope you stick around the role-playing part of the Downs, though, and join games as they come up! I'll get back to your character with the innkeeper's reply tomorrow morning. -- Folwren Edit: Golly, a lot has happened here since I was last around. I am so sorry about that. I will activate myself tomorrow and get things up to date and moving along.

I have replied to Loslote and Nessa. I'm so sorry it's been so long. For the sake of continuity, I had Nessa arrive after Loslote's character.
Cook is still missing, I believe. The inn is currently full of elves, a man, and a few hobbits. I'll PM a few people and tell them I'm back and ready to keep writing, if they are. -- Folwren

I guess this is a question for Folwren, but since I hope we might get a few fellow travellers at some point I won't PM it!
Is there an "official" back story for the Cook's disappearance or are we letting things develop?

To my memory, there is no official (or even unofficial) back story to Cook's disappearance. She was just gone. People are looking for her, and I pretty much left what happened in the search and find to people who were playing the parts of the seekers. So I have no idea what happened to her.

The cook's disappearance. Story so far...
Starts at 641 with Primrose (assistant cook) reporting that no sign was to be found of head cook Celandine "Cela Brandybuck" (aged 56 notoriously eccentric - can be absent minded. Good swimmer). Breakfast hasn't been started and there is no sign of her in or around the Inn.Rowan (maid) recalls that the cook had received a letter the previous day which caused her to turn white so was probably bad news. The cook was off her game for the rest of that day. the Shiriff Rusty Smallburrow was summoned. There is some speculation that the cook has been kidnapped but when it is known that she received a letter, Will teh ostler is sent to find Hugh the postman who may know something about it.
Mean while noone has seen anything it seems apart from Mungo "Hitch" Brandybuck, black sheep of the clan and a petty criminal who after some "encouragement" reveals that he saw three figures in a boat on the Brandywine from its west bank near Hays End around midnight as he travelled north towards Stock. One person was rowing and the two passengers were arguing - one of them might have been a woman. This news prompts a seachparty of 4 hobbit lads and some of the Big Folk (unspecified) to go searching down river taking ponies from the inn. (Mithalwen and the twins arrive (back) at the inn but are unaware of what is happening) Primrose and Rowan decide to search Cela's room. Will catches up with Hugh-the-Postman at Gardenia Boffin's house. Hithadan the ranger borrows a horse and goes east across the river to find out if one off his fellow rangers in that area has any news. Hugh tries to remember about the letter " ‘It was a great, fat letter,’ he went on. ‘And there was a note on it too, on the back where it was sealed. Where it was come from, I think. And not one of your usual places, neither!’" HE agrees to accompany Will back to the Inn. After clearing the common room Prim covers for Rowan while she searches the cook's bedroom. (post 674) A carpet bag, cloak and a quantity of clothing are missing. The state of the drawers indicate that the packing was hasty but the room is otherwise in order with the bed made. A picture of a river Cela kept by her bed is missing. Rowan finds tucked at the back of the wardrobe's high shelf a little shell box. She opens it...it contains a carved ship with a hobbit figure on the deck. This is revealed in a scene with Granny Greenhill and may not be common knowledge at the inn yet. Teh box is entrusted to granny while Rowan works. Hugh, still on his way back to the Perch with Will, says he was passed the letter by a hunter who came from the South and West and he had it from another. In post 699 Hugh has this further recollection: ‘That letter,’ he said wagging his finger at Will. ‘Now this is going to sound quite mad to you, I’m sure. But it’s the honest truth. That place where it was from....I remember the fellow who gave it to me said the fellow as gave it to him had come up from somewhere as sounded like.....let’s see now – "wash", "washing". No, now that’s not it.’ Hugh scrunched up his face and thought hard. ‘ "Launder"....that’s what he said, or at least something real close to it. “Launder”....’ ‘That and he said the fellow told him he’d come up from the end of the river.....’ Mr Boffin from his thoughts in the latest post clearly hasn't caught up with Rowan's news. Kath's Cir was in the kitchen getting tea may have... she has promised me a post and perhaps may have found out? I think we have a bit to go on here even if we have to be careful about what we do with character that aren't NPCs. I haven't time for a post for myself now but I should get something done tomorrow. Hope this helps...

Sorry Pio, corrected ... and I thought I was doing well remembering to cancel the sig It is lovely to see you back even if it involves a wrist slap
Loslote, my edit is mainly wine poncing so it won't affect yours. Having gone through the thread with a toothcomb I think RPG Mith was being unfair when she says they have gone on wild goose/geese chases but it is clear that noone person has all available information on the Cook's disappearance. We need Will and Hugh's information to reach the inn and Rowan's discovery to be wider known? If Mithalwen (gah how I wish now that I hadn't borrowed her name as a screen name here) sees the box and model she might be able to give more information since she is a harbour dwelling woodworker. Pio, I don't suppose you know if any old players might return?

I suppose the place that sounds like "Launder" is Lond Daer? It is more south than southwest but given that most hobbits seldom venture out of the Shire let alone beyond Bree that isn't a big problem.

Hullo, hullo!
It's been quite a while since I've roleplayed (I think I even did it on this site at one point, under another name that I've since forgotten). I'm trying to revive some of my old writing skills, and if I remember correctly, this was a great way to flex creative muscle. Maybe I can coax some life back into this thread along the way. So, character bio: *** NAME: Amadi (formerly Amroth) AGE: Twenty-something RACE: Men (Southern Gondor by blood) GENDER: Male WEAPONS: None per se, but he can pack a mean whallop with his fist (or feet) if necessary. Also carries a small but sharp knife reserved for herb-gathering and other non-combative tasks. He has plain but finely-crafted (elven, in fact) leather vambraces, ostensibly for defense, though their true purpose is to disguise certain markings on his wrists. APPEARANCE: Shortish black hair and very darkly tanned skin, which contrasts strikingly with his pale grey eyes. Small for a Gondorian, but strong in a wiry sort of way. Goes barefoot. Plain gold hoop earring in his left ear, which along with the haircut gives him an exotic flavor. Wears weathered (less polite eyes would see threadbare) trousers, tunic, and vest, all sun-bleached to pastel browns and greys. His favorite piece of clothing is an old but well-cared-for leather coat with substantial pockets. Nearly always smiling. PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: Very open and friendly--to a point. His past experiences have taught him not to take anyone at face value. Amadi speaks several languages, and picks up new ones quickly. Has experience as a sailor, cook, impromptu diplomat, butcher, vet, valet, and many other odd jobs he probably wouldn't want you to know about. He's honest, generous to a fault, hardworking, but impulsive and a little too self-indulgent. He has a relatively loose concept of things like "laws", not having lived in one place long enough to have much to do with either, which occasionally gets him into trouble. Loves food of all kinds. HISTORY: Son of a Gondorian trader, he was captured by pirates at a young age and sold as a slave to the Southrons. He had the good fortune to fall into friendly hands, and was eventually freed and employed as ship's cook by his former master, a spice merchant. Spent years sailing to corners of the world generally unknown to Northern civilization. Shipwrecked off the Northern coast and rescued by friendly if unusual coast-dwellers, he decided to take the opportunity to see the North, and eventually to return to his long-lost home in Gondor. *** He might push the character limits a bit, but I think he makes sense and could work well within the world of the Perch. He could have some interesting connections with the elves already at the inn, and might even be helpful in finding Cook, given the right information. I'll put up his first post shortly. So how about it? ---------------------------------------- LINKED ~*~ Pio Last edited by piosenniel; 01-04-2010 at 02:21 PM. |

How intriguing...your character might just be what we need. Plus, I like your posting style, judging from your first post. I'd respond, but that's really for someone in the kitchen to do right now. I can see a bunch of possiblilities for your Amadi, and I hope you stick around.

Welcome, Small One. Haha, I feel like I'm talking to a Hobbit for real and am some elf being. *insert evil-smiley thing* I'm kidding.
Welcome! Your character looks great! I intend to read the game thread as soon as possible and get writing on this RPG again. I have been extraordinarily busy on the Mead Hall in the Rohan Forum. (I suggest that anyone who wants to have a blast playing with a LOT of really good players, go there...we're pretty active.) But I think it is required that you play a little here at the Golden Perch before going there..... So! Allow me to allow you to write something by posting a response to your character. I will do that. Today. I promise. -- Foley

Well, I posted something. It is rough, I grant you, but it will continue the story line.
Now, earlier, Prim and Rowan had gone into Cook's room and found something. I don't think they found a letter. More like a carved ship or something. If I have time later, I will look into that and see just what it was. -- Foley

Folwren you don't have to read through the whole post. I did a summary a little while ago to try and make it easier for any new recruits (as well as forgetful old lags) in post 822 of this thread. It includes relevant extracts and references most of the posts.

Hello, everyone, and thanks for the warm welcome!
Folwren, I'm working on a post now, and I'll put it up it as soon as I get it finished. Mithalwen, it would really depend on when your character was last at Mithlond. I was thinking that Amadi had spent the winter with the elves there, and then left Shireward when the weather turned (which would mean he has at least some proficiency in elvish). I doubt he got those vambraces by honest means, so if you really want to make him squirm, you can have her know the craftsman. That could be fun. Speaking of weather, is it still spring at the inn? PS - Loslote, I think the conversation at the elves' table is wide open. You can't respond to me directly, but maybe you can get the conversation drifting toward events at Mithlond to set up for some interaction? PPS - With this username, I'll probably get the hobbit thing a lot. Good thing I'm short and lovable. Last edited by SmallOne; 01-02-2010 at 01:01 PM. |

Yes it is still Spring ... there was a small time distortion but only a few days have passed since the thread began!!
Mithalwen has been away from Mithlond only as long as it takes to get there by pony & trap. She came to meet the twins who travelled as far as the Shire from rivendell with pilgrims to the palantir plus a couple of days. So she probably left a couple of weeks ago at most. Now Mithalwen is a craftswoman - specialist in musical instruments but since that would have small demand relatively I have imagined a lot of her "bread and butter" work is in more practical day to day items in wood and metal. To add leather too it might stretch her skills but I bet she would have made the buckles and would surely know the leather worker since Mithlond would have been a tiny community at that time. They might even be the type of thing she would use her self though more for support and protection when using tools. Mithalwen had a clearout to make room in her house for her expected visitors (the waggon is full of stuff that she was going to try and sell) so there might have been ample opportunity for an enterprising chap to help himself to anything of interest just lying around . Yes ... I think there will be some recognition. Excellent....

Just to let everyone know - everyone is invited to post in the inns/meadhall in the Shire, Rohan, and Gondor.
Just make sure your character and writing are up to the standards set in each ongoing storyline there. ~*~ Pio

Ball's in your court, Mithalwen.
Sorry to rush things so much, but I'm officially back in school as of tomorrow, and I wanted to get at least a good substantial post in before getting back to the grindstone. I'll still be around, but the length of posts will probably suffer. Amadi probably left Mithlond sometime in the past couple of weeks, either shortly before or after your char. left, depending on how you write it. Since he was on foot and not really in a hurry, I think that would put him in about the right place. |

Okay, this post brings out an aspect of Idhy that I have kept mostly in the background so far, just mentioning in her sister's-gone angst. She's a little bit evil in a fun kind of way. This, however, gives Amadi a bit more of an opening into the group - Idhy wants him there for the entertainment value.
