Elrond. There was always that mystique quality about him and his lineage. I mean here's a character who decended from some of the greatest people of the first age, Elven, Edain and Maia.

My favourite character is Éowyn (AKA Dernhelm). There are very few female characters in LOTR and she is the only one that has character development in the story. Galadriel, Goldberry and Arwen are rather 1-dimensional. Éowyn is brave, strong and feels very deeply. She loves Théoden as a father, hates Wormtongue, becomes infatuated with Aragorn and is rejected by him, decides to die in battle, shows courage and desparation in defeating the Black Captain, suffers boredom and depression when she cannot rejoin the battle, examines her sulking, whining behaviour and then she finally falls in love with Faramir. (OK, so it’s a hokey fairy-tale ending.)

I'd actually say Gimli, he's overcome the odds, gone places no dwarf has gone before, made friends with one of the members of the most distrusting elf-families, and finally sailed on an elf-ships to the west. plus, he beat legolas in the orc game.

popular? i would have said that it was between legolas, aragorn, and frodo
also maybe between gandalf and aragorn favourite? this is where i am alone in my choices (or at least one of a minority or in some cases a large group) denethor, grima, eomer, theodred, glorfindel, thranduil, faramir, cirdan, and some others who i cant remember.

My favorite charaters have to be a tie between Frodo, Sam, and Gandalf. I love Gandalf just because he is so great, Frodo reminds me of me, and Sam is just a good hearted hobbit. I would have to agree that the most popular charater in the book would have to be someone like Gandalf, or Frodo. Though Merry and Pip are good too, but they are still kind of supporting charaters, and they are great in the book for totally different reasons than in movie.

Where is Targon in this list? Renowned keeper of the buttery and storehouse for the Guards of the Citadel.

*sigh* My favorite character never makes the top of the polls, aw shucks! Like Elrian, I'd vote for Elrond. He spans so much more history than just LotR, and his family connections can't be topped. Poor overlooked Elrond!

Ummmm...what about Elladan & Elrohir? Younger than Elrond. Older than Aragorn. And two for the price of one. Although I have to admit I'm very partial to Frodo as well.

Well the character that i thought was most popular was not on ther poll. So i would have to say that it would be Legolas. Just because of his bow and just the fact that he is an elf. Aragorn is awesome too.

I like Pippin and Merry best. The only optimists in the Fellowship, no obviously heroes, are rather in the background (if compared with Aragorn or Frodo) and very "well-to-do hobbits". And then Elfhelm and Aragorn of course, they´re friendly and humorous too.
In the Silmarillion I like Finrod and Beleg. I don´t know any reason, they´re just sympatical.
