Tolkien's Birthday
Today is the birthday of the man who started it all. Anybody celebrating?

The Tolkien society proposes that we toast our dear Professor. Go here if you wanna know more:toast 2004
I know I'll be toasting: white wine, to be exact. I find it very cool that we share the same month of birth: my b-day in on the 15! <font size=1 color=339966>[ 9:08 AM January 03, 2004: Message edited by: Evisse the Blue ]

I'll definitley be toasting. I celebrated Bilbo and Frodo's birthday in my own strange way, so I'll definatley raise a glass to Tolkien. Hey, it even gives me an excuse to bake a cake, lol.
Wasn't last year his eleventy-first? I missed it then

This is also the birthday of my friend's daughter, so remembering it isn't too difficult .
Husband & I have both been down with the flu, so no wine, but we will definitely raise a glass of watered-down orange juice to the Professor's memory tonight.

I shall celebrate with a glass of Grappa Julia, a log fire and a quiet reading of a few of my favorite chapters of The Silmarillion. I had no notion that this was the Professor's birthday, so I have been pleasantly surprised!

I will also be raising a glass, wherever I happen to be, at 3:00 p.m. CST (21:00 GMT) to the Professor! That is around the usual time for my walks (slowly, slowly on to Lothlorien!). Best wishes for quick recovery to your and your husband, Kalimac! I'm lucky my ailment is only a bad cold--can't breathe but I can get around a little (with an entourage handing me Kleenex and decongestants)!
Cheers! Lyta

I'll be celebrating because it's my birthday, too. If only I'd been born a year later I would have been Frodo to his Bilbo, and come of age on his eleventy first. Well, a near miss is close enough.
Speedy recovery, Lyta and Kalimac! -Lily

I`m glad somebody said something! I was just getting on to say happy birth-day to Tolkien, when I saw this, so I`ll say it: Happy birth-day J.R.R. Tolkien! Your my hero!
I am also glad that my b-day is in January. I`m 13 on the 29th. (YAY!) Cheers! |

I remembered to toast The Professor this morning. I'm definitely proud of myself. I even baked a cake in the shape of the One Ring, and spent about two hours writing the Ring inscription on it with vanilla icing.

I wished the Prof. a happy birthday this morning and have told everyone i have seen in the last 2 weeks that Tolkien's birthday is on the 3rd of January.
i get particularly excited today because the 3rd is Tolkien's b-day and the 4th is the anniversary of when i saw Sean Bean.

Well, I toasted Prof. Tolkien at as close to 3 p.m. CST (21:00 GMT) as I could, according to the instructions on the Tolkien Society webpage. The only odd thing about it was that I was a mile out on my walk and instinctively turned towards the West to give the toast (which was with a bottle previously containing vanilla extract filled with just enough red wine to fulfill the toast.) I did not even realize I had been facing West until I was on the way back home--just thought it appropriate, even if my location is way far west already from a posited Britain-based Middle Earth...
Cheers! Lyta <font size=1 color=339966>[ 6:05 PM January 03, 2004: Message edited by: Lyta_Underhill ]

Thanks, Lily and Lyta! . We're well over the worst of it, just still having that feeling like you've just been run through a laundry mangle.
Finwe, that sounds like an impressive cake. Photos?

Ack. I forgot it was today. Can you believe that? Especially since it's also the birthday of one of my cousins. Thanks for the reminder. At 3:00 CST I was staring at the clock thinking, "I'm off work in an hour. An hour! A very long hour...."
Oh well. That's life. I would say "Happy Birthday" except that, well, you know.... Edit: Ah, well, I did just drink a "toast" of sorts. I was far too tired to do anything but think "to Tolkien" before downing some wine, but it was a well meant "to Tolkien". I will most likely be having a toast with the leftovers from the New Year's celebration...
