The Wizards
My weakest spot in things "middle earthsy" is probably that of the wizards. Im not sure who they are really. And what the actual different types symbolise ie grey, white. Any posts in this topic will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Wait, you mean I get the first answer to a querie? I have moved up in the world! Ok, I'll give it my best shot.
The Valar sent five Wizards to Middle-Earth to guide the races against evil. The Wizards were Maiar. (if thats how you spell it) The White wizard was highest in the order and was called Saruman by men. Gandalf was the grey wizard and was second in the order. And Radagast was the Brown wizard and was third. The other two were blue wizards and their dealings are unclear. Gandalf was the only one who really succeeded in his task.

To add onto Eomers post, the two blue wizards that he said little is known of, went into the east with Saruman when they first arrived in ME. Saruman came back, and the 2 blue wizards stayed in the east and began cults with the less developed societies in the area. the two wizards names were Alatar and Pallando...they were never seen again. They were lesser evils, and were no threat to the rest of ME.

Does anyone know who sent the Isitari oveer to Middle Earth? Was it one of the Valar, or Illuvator himself?

"a council of the Valar, summoned it seems by Manwė ('and maybe he called upon Eru for counsel?'), at which it was resolved to send out three emissaries to Middle-earth"
I really suggest Unfinished Tales and its essay on the istari for all wizard-related questions, on which Tolkien himself often was not certain or definite. |
