narfforc has been trapped in the Barrow!
Although many characters have a pipe in the movie, it is probably because of the barrels of weed that Merry and Pippin find in the storeroom at Isengard, that they have more. That is the film version out of the way. In the book try reading the prologue, part 2 Concerning Pipe-weed, and the chapter in The Two Towers called Flotsam and Jetsam.

Eye

I also recall Gandalf, Gimli, Aragorn, Bilbo, and several hundred random hobbits at Bilbo's birthday smoking pipe-weed. Elves are the only ones who don't seem to smoke--perhaps that's why they live so long. They don't ever get lung cancer like every other race in Middlearth.

Its probably also why they caused so many problems - I'm sure if Celebrimbor had sat down for a pipe & a bit of a think he'd have been able to see through all that nonsense Annatar was up to.

I'm pretty sure that Tolkien was making a point about non smokers being prone to being a nuisance - after all its the pipe smokers who clear up the Elves' mess.

Ooh so is that why Boromir had to die first as a morally suspect non smoker?
I have finally got around to looking at the EE ROTK appendices and commentaries and Gandalf coughing on his pipe in Minas Tirith (unlikely given his reborn Maia constitution - but in the scale of things a minor "crime") was apparently to appease the rabid non-smoking lobby in the US.... which I find rather bizarre......
