Tolkien Long live the Uruks?

I would like a question answered;
Just how long had the Uruk-hai existed?
Did Melkor make them in the first? Would they have made a part in the Battles for Arda in the first age? Did Sauron use them in the battle with the Last alliance?
I ask this after reading some posts on "How hard is it to kill a troll?" where I remembered that Uruks appeared in the Mines of Moria, that would suggest that they have been around in the Misty mountains. Did Bilbo meet any on his trip through the misty mountains? Did they come about by natural (and I use the term loosely) cross breeding, or did Melkor, or Sauron force it?

Sharkû has just left Hobbiton.
I really recommend you check our Haudh-en-Ndengin Archive index, where there are several links to exhaustive Uruk-topics.
