Can someone check a quote from Unfinished Tales?

I'm doing a research paper on Tolkien, and I have the following quote:

Indeed, the Valar – gods of Middle-Earth – had ordered Gandalf’s kin never to “reveal themselves in forms of majesty” (Tolkien, “Unfinished Tales” 406?).

I got this quote from an online source I don't remember anymore, so I don't know which printing this is from... I'd really appreciate it if someone could find this passage in their Unfinished Tales and confirm the page number.

(And, if it's not too much trouble, the info on your copy, mainly the year of printing, edition, and publisher.)

Page 406, Ballantine Books DelRey. Copyright 1980 by George Allen & Unwin (Publishers) Ltd. I think it is the first edition (If UT has more than one edition) because it doesn't say anything about that.

The citation is accurate--it appears on page 406 of my edition (Del Rey paperback first published in 1980).

Only the part of your citation which in the quotation marks actually appears in the source. Here is a slightly longer portion:

Whew! That was a looooooooong sentence! I'm wondering if Tolkien's schoolteachers ever got on his case about run-on sentences

The characterization of the Valar as "the gods of Middle earth" is something I'm not sure Tolkien would completely agree with. Tolkien's universe is, essentially, monotheistic. He does use the word "gods" on some occasions, for instance, "the fields and pastures of Yavanna, gold between the tall wheat of the gods". Certainly the Valar are derived largely from the gods of norse mythology. But usually Tolkien seems refer to the Valar, when not doing so by name, as "the powers". (I'm not sure of the chronology of at what points in his life JRRT used which term).

The question "Valar=gods?" could probably be a good thread topic in itself.

Thank you so much guys! I know the Valar = gods is a gross simplification, but for the purpose of this paper the reader just needed a quick idea what the Valar are.

Do either of you happen to have "Modern heroism; essays on D. H. Lawrence, William Empson, & J. R. R. Tolkien" by Roger Sale? Stupid me wrote down some quotes but forgot to write down the pages...
