Concerning Figwit
In the movie, Figwit (among others) has dark hair. I thought all Elves were blonde with the exception of Elrond, Arwen, and Luthien. Is there anywhere in the books that says this is not so? If there is, where is it?

The colours of Elven hair are just as diverse as of human; more, actually, since some had 'silver' hair.

I always thought that Half-Elves had darker hair.... Maybe that's just something I made up?

No no, your saying it all wrong Gorwingel! It's: Frodo is grea...who is THAT?!
lol, I didn't even notice Figwit until someone pointed him out to me.
As for the question, I thought the books said that Elrond's sons had brown hair also...or maybe it was just my imagination.
Anyway, I don't think Tolkein ever said that all elves were blonde.

Dang, we better not tell the Orli freaks about this one... But what kind of name is "Figwit"?! I mean, good grief!
::wonders how to say "blindingly handsome dream-elf" in Sindarin, then bangs head repeatedly against wall::
There. All better now.
Anyway, I hold with Sharkū. The seven sons of Fėanor differed in hair color, and they were from the same family--one was "fair," the other "dark." If it differed regionally then they would all be "fair," or all "dark," right?

quote:
I always thought that Half-Elves had darker hair... maybe that's something I made up?

Si. How would you explain Luthien? She was a brunette.
-'Vana
[ February 19, 2003: Message edited by: DaughterofVana ]

*BIG REVELATION* Ohhhhhhh, NOW I get it! I always wondered what people were talking about when they said something about Figwit! Was he just from the movie, though? And I thought he was one of Elrond's sons...
[ February 19, 2003: Message edited by: Ithaeliel ]

Nope, Elrohir and Elladan were Elrond's sons. Figwit was just one of the nameless Elves that PJ felt sorry for and gave him the really gay name Figwit.

Argh, hair colour again!
Alright. There's a distinct difference between the movies and the book, because PJ used the idea that Elves from Rivendell were dark-haired, and Elves from Lothlorien (and Mirkwood) were blond(e). I suppose that's why Figwit is dark; because he's taken to be a Rivendell Elf.
(Admittedly this is not always the case, as I'm sure I've seen dark-haired Elves in 'Lorien, and there's a few red-heads floating around, but they're exceptions to the general rule.)
Regarding the question "What does it say in the book," in Appendix F, II - On Translation, it says (of the Eldar aka the High Elves:

quote:
They were tall, fair of skin and grey-eyed, though their locks were dark, save in the golden house of Finarfin...

So basically, that can be taken to mean that most High Elves (mainly those living in Rivendell) had dark hair, which agrees with the fact that Figwit is dark.
No idea if that helps or not, but I've confused myself as to where this discussion is going now. Curse those Elves and their hair colouring!

quote:
Kind of off-topic, is Figwit the elf they you see the back of ridding into Rivendell?

I don't think so. I think that's a different random Elf. If you freeze the scene and study him, he looks different to Figwit. Different hair colour, too, I think. And I'm sure the Figwit obsessives would have picked up on it by now!
Note: Yes, I do have far too much time on my hands.
