Ok, basically try to find other books/films which have characters/settings etc. almost identical to LotR. (the most obvious one is Harry Potter, eg.
Wormtail?Wormtongue,
Invisibility cloak?Cloak of Lorien

Wormtail => Wormtongue,
Invisibility cloak => Cloak of Lorien,

etc., etc.
You get the point. However, try to come up with other books apart from HP...

The Magic Three of Solatia

Three Elven Rings, one all powerful ring => Three magic buttons, third rules the other 2

Dark Lord with many personalities => Evil Wizard with many personalities

Garath (birth name, became Belgarath) - Gandalf

Garion (reluctant hero...hmmm...) - Frodo

Lelldoran - Legolas

C'Nedra - Eowyn

Barak - Beorn

Polgara - a grouchy Arwen

Oh...what's his name? Began with an "R" I think: The Horse Lord - Aragorn

Silk - Smeagol when good and Sam all in one

Mandorallen - an uncorrupted Boromir

This is all in the David Eddings series (you know, "Polgara the Sorceress", "Belgarath the Sorcerer", etc.)

EDIT: just remembered the horse lord's name: Dernik (roughly spelled). Okay: didn't begin with an R...

The Fionavar Gobeline (by Guy Gavriel kay):
Lisen (most beautiful of all, falls in love with mortal man, sacrifice her life for him) = Lúthien
Dark dangerous forest, which I can't remember the name of = Mirkwood
Dark lord captured in a mountain = Sauron
Middle-earth = Fionavar (the maps look alike)
Erú = The Weaver
History of ME = History of Fionavar
Elves going west when they leave Middle-earth/Fionavar = well, you choose which of them... [img]smilies/wink.gif[/img]

Sorry I can't remember the names, I find it annoying too.

VanimaEdhel, I know who you are talking about, allthough I'm not so sure he was named Dernik - did you check the books? [img]smilies/confused.gif[/img]

The Sword of Shannara (by Terry brooks):
Flick = Sam
Shea = Frodo
Allanon = Gandalf
etc. etc. with the characters
Shire = Valley of Shadows (is that the correct name? I've only read the Danish translation, so I have to guess on the "real" names)
Mordor = Kingdom of Skulls (? again [img]smilies/wink.gif[/img] )
Moria = those dark halls of kings or something, they have to pass to go to Paranor
Paranor = Isengard?

Hope it's okay I did two in the same post [img]smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]
And if you know the names of all the things I mentioned with a wrong name, please let me know [img]smilies/wink.gif[/img]

Being the Shannara fan that I am, I will help by correcting you. [img]smilies/smile.gif[/img]
Shire= Shady Vale
Mordor= Skull Kingdom

And here are some additions from the Sword of Shannara:
Aragorn= Balinor
Minas Tirith= Tyrsis
Gimli= Hendel
Legolas= a combination of Durin and Dayel
Merry= Menion Leah
Rivendell= Arborlon (though it's not exactly in the SoS)
Nazgul= Skull Bearers
Sauron= Warlock Lord

Alright, the Sword of Shannara may be quite similar to LOTR, but I love that darn book (though not as much as LOTR). Plus, that's only one out 11 Shannara books. The rest are completely different from LOTR. [img]smilies/smile.gif[/img]

I suppose that the Ringwraiths are quite similar to the Dementors in Harry Potter. But last time I checked, Ringwraiths were not soul-sucking fiends, as are Dementors. They are both, of course, servants of a higher dark power but I really don't think that Dementors were men at one time. And the chilling fear their presence inspires is similar, too.

OK, so I'm a Harry Potter maniac. So what! [img]smilies/biggrin.gif[/img] Recently I've been trying to calm my anxiousness by reading fanfiction, but I want the next book really bad!
