Songs that remind you of....
Have you ever heard a song on the radio or a cd and it reminded you of ME in some way?
There are several songs around that are not ME inspired, yet the lyrics can easily relate to ME if you think about it. Here is an example: "Nightingale" by Norah Jones Nightingale Sing us a song Of a love that once belonged Nightingale Tell me you tale Was your journey far too long? Does it seem like I'm looking for an answer To a question I can't ask I don't know which way the feather falls Or if I should blow it to the left All the voices that are spinnin' around me Trying to tell me what to say Can I fly right behind you And you can take me away Each time I hear this song, I can't help but be reminded of Beren and Lúthien (perhaps it's the "Nightingale" that throws me). Now it's your turn. What songs to you listen to today that remind you of ME? Explain why you think it relates and copy down the lyrics. Remember, NO SONG PARODIES. That belongs on a different thread.

This song reminds me of Nimrodel, though it has maybe nothing to do with her
it's Kamelot's, and has a really touching guitar solo A Sailorman's Hymn can you hear the sirens resound? from the coastline of Ireland tonight it's the song of a promising heart of the souls that the ocean unite and she stands by the window alone staring into the rain she is trying to guide his way home from the waters that keep them apart so she lights up a candle for hope to be found captive and blind by the darkness around firm as a mountain, she never will mourn timeless awaiting the break of dawn can you hear the sailorman's hymn? as it comes with the rise of the tide it is sung where the rainbow begins as a comfort for tears she has cried she remains by the window alone staring into the rain she is trying to guide his way home keeps on praying for god to protect him she lights up a candle for hope to be found captive and blind by the darkness around each wave a promise, a new hope reborn sunrise consoles at the break of dawn ........ it also reminds me of the killing of alqualonde and the "birth" of the sun and the moon........

I know this'll sound sappy and totally retarded, but after finishing RotK at 4:30AM and with the Faramir/Éowyn romance still fresh on my mind, I flipped on the radio and on came Bryan Adam's "Heaven". I can't listen to that song without thinking about Faramir and Éowyn. Here's the lyrics:
Oh, thinkin' about all our younger years There was only you and me We were young and wild and free Now nothin' can take you away from me We've been down that road before But that's over now You keep me comin' back for more Chorus: Baby you're all that I want When you're lyin' here in my arms I'm findin' it hard to believe We're in heaven And love is all that I need And I found it there in your heart It isn't too hard to see We're in heaven Oh, once in your life you find someone Who will turn your world around Bring you up when you're feelin' down Yeah, nothin' could change what you mean to me Oh, there's lots that I could say But just hold me now 'Cause our love will light the way (chorus) I've been waitin' for so long For somethin' to arrive For love to come along Now our dreams are comin' true Through the good times and the bad Yeah, I'll be standin' there by you (chorus) And after that, "Celebrate" came on the waves and I about laughed myself tearful. It was then that I realized staying up all night reading was quite a bad thing to do.

Well...how about Why Don't You and I by Santana ft. Chad Kroeger for Aragorn and Arwen/Faramir and Eowyn?
Since the moment I spotted you It's like walking round with little wings on my shoes My stomach's filled with the butterflies Mm, but it's alright. Bouncing round from cloud to cloud I got the feeling like I'm never gonna come down If I said I didn't like it then you know I'd lie Mm... (CHORUS) Every time I try to talk to you I get tongue-tied Turns out That everything I say to you Comes out wrong, it never comes out right So I'm saying why don't you and I get together We'll take on the world and be together forever Heads we will, tails we'll try again So I'm saying why don't you and I get together We'll fly to the moon and straight on to heaven Cuz without you they're never gonna let me in When's this fever gonna break? I think I've handled more than any man can take I'm like a lovesick puppy chasing you around Mm, but it's alright Bouncing round from cloud to cloud I got the feeling like I'm never gonna come down If I said I didn't like it then you know I'd lie Mm... (CHORUS) Slowly I begin to realize this is never gonna end But about the same time you walk by and I say, Oh, here we go again! Oh! (Musical Interlude) (CHORUS X5, SLOWLY FADE AWAY)

I won't type the whole songs, but I'll type the part that reminds me of Tolkien:
P.O.D. : "Boom" "BOOM, here comes the BOOM Ready or not, Here comes the boys from the south BOOM! here comes the BOOM! Ready or not, how do you like me now?" When I hear that song, I always get this picture in my head of a battle of Gondor. (Probably the "boys from the south" part) Michelle Tumes: "King of my heart" "All that you are, All that you do, Like mountains of treasure, Like an ocean of jewels, You rule all the stars Make me brand new I love you forever You're the King of my heart" The part "Like mountians of treasure" reminds me of Bilbo, and "You rule all the stars" Reminds me of Galadriels phial.

Lee Ann Womack's I Hope You Dance really reminds me of LOTR. (ROTK BOOK SPOILERS in response to one line: Be careful!!)
I hope you never lose your sense of wonder, You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger, May you never take one single breath for granted, God forbid love ever leave you empty handed, I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean, Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens, Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance, And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance....I hope you dance. I think the line "Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance" really reminds me of Sam and his speech at Osgiliath in the TTT movie. That line about "sense of wonder" really reminds me of the 4 Hobbits. they have a lot to wonder at on their journey. After this I'll just insert stuff after every line: it's easier. I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance, Mordor is always shown as fire behind mountains. Never settle for the path of least resistance, Like not falling to the corruption of the Ring, y'know. Livin' might mean takin' chances but they're worth takin', The whole quest was a chance taken. Lovin' might be a mistake but it's worth makin', like Eowyn falling in love with Aragorn. Don't let some hell bent heart leave you bitter, When you come close to sellin' out reconsider, Liek Frodo despairing and then Sam showing him hope again. Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance, And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance. I hope you dance....I hope you dance. I hope you dance....I hope you dance. (Time is a wheel in constant motion always rolling us along, Tell me who wants to look back on their years and wonder where those years have gone.) The descant (in pharenthesis) is like everyone looking back to their lives before the quest. I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean, Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens, like the door of life in the Shire closed for Frodo, but at the same time, the door for sailing to Valinor opened, showing infinite possibilities. Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance, And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance. Dance....I hope you dance. I hope you dance....I hope you dance. I hope you dance....I hope you dance.. (Time is a wheel in constant motion always rolling us along, Tell me who wants to look back on their years and wonder where those years have gone.) Same old thoughts for that part. Whaddya think: too corny, or can anyone else besides myself see the relationship too?

I know this isn't really a modern song, but whenever I hear On My Own from the musical Les Misérables, I always think of Èowyn thinking of Aragorn. I'm not going to type it all, but here is most of it:
Sometimes I walk alone at night When everybody else is sleeping I think of him and then I'm happy with the company I'm keeping The city goes to bed And I can live inside... my head On my own Pretending he's beside me All alone I walk with him till morning Without him, I feel his arms around me And when I lose my way I close my eyes And he has found me ........ In the darkness, The trees are full of starlight And all I see is him and me forever and forever And I know That it's only in my mind That I'm talking to myself, And not to him ........ I love him, But when the night is over He is gone, The river's just a river Without him, The world around me changes The trees are bare, and everywhere the streets are full of strangers I love him, But every day I'm learning All my life I've only been pretending Without me, His world will go on turning ---------------------- That's most of it, and I think it perfectly describes Èowyn's feelings towards Aragorn. That's one of my favorite songs, Eress.
I also like "I Dreamed a Dream" and it reminds me of Boromir, though I can't exactly place why. Could be that I listened to it while arguing with someone over something in the movie regarding his character. Anyway, the lyrics There was a time when men were kind, When their voices were soft And their words inviting. There was a time when love was blind And the world was a song And the song was exciting. There was a time Then it all went wrong. I dreamed a dream in time gone by When hope was high And life worth living I dreamed that love would never die I dreamed that God would be forgiving. Then I was young and unafraid And dreams were made and used And wasted There was no ransom to be paid No song unsung No wine untasted. But the tigers come at night With their voices soft as thunder As they tear your hope apart As they turn your dream to shame. He slept a summer by my side He filled my days With endless wonder He took my childhood in a stride But he was gone when autumn came. And still I dream he'll come to me That we will live the years together But there are dreams that cannot be And there are storms We cannot weather… I had a dream my life would be So different from this hell I’m living So different now from what it seemed Now life has killed The dream I dreamed. I suppose there are a few passages in there you could relate to Boromir if you give it a stretch. Such as: But the tigers come at night With their voices soft as thunder As they tear your hope apart and possibly the last few, given a pull. Anyway, that's just a song that reminds me. Go about your lives, citizens. Edit: Leave it to me to screw up simple UBB code. [ March 02, 2003: Message edited by: Rynoah, the Overly-Happy ]

Also, From A Distance always reminds me of ME.
From a distance The world looks Blue and green And the snow capped mountains white~ This always makes me think of the Misty Mountains From a distance The ocean Meets the stream And the eagle takes to flight~ And right here I always think of Gwaihir Yeah I know it's not really related, but it's close enough for me. Ryonah~ You've actually heard of that song?

This reminded me, in a way of Aragorn and Arwen, because of a few lines, and the fact that her "heart would break" whether she stayed or went- for him or for her father, Elrond, and her brothers and everybody else.
"Before I Go" by Unwritten Law Life hurts so bad Don't want you sad Just look back to Good times we had I'd give my soul for you I know Want to hold you before I go Before I go I need you to know I'm still alive in you It's my time to go Don't stay up late I'm not afraid And I don't want your heart to break I know I've seen what's been unseen Live fast, die young It's part of me (it's my time now) Before I go (it's my time now) My soul is on it's way (it's my time now) I need you to know Before I go Analised: "Before I Go" by Unwritten Law Life hurts so bad ( Elves- the sadness they always feel, and for both of them- being away from each other all the time and having very little chance to ever settle down or get married or something.) Don't want you sad (obviously) Just look back to Good times we had (can't think of many...) I'd give my soul for you I know (it eems that way in the appendices) Want to hold you before I go Before I go I need you to know I'm still alive in you It's my time to go Don't stay up late I'm not afraid And I don't want your heart to break I know I've seen what's been unseen Live fast, die young ( Reference to giving up her immortality) It's part of me it's my time now Before I go it's my time now My soul is on it's way (it's my time now) I need you to know Before I go I don't know, it just gave me the feeling like that. Oh, have I got a list for you....
Here's a perfect one: Rivendell, by Rush: I've traveled now for many miles It feels so good to feel the smiles of Friends who never left you mind When you were far away From the golden light of coming dawn 'Til the twilight where the sun is gone We treasure every season And every passing day Good, huh? There's another good one by them, called Trees. Very much an Ent song, I think. Here's one by Pink Floyd, called Us And Them; it works for the war bits in RotK, mainly: Us and them And after all we're only ordinary men Me and you God only knows it's not what we would choose to do "Forward!" he cried from the rear and the front rank died And the General sat, and the lines on the map Moved from side to side Black and blue And who knows which is which and who is who Up and down And in the end it's only round and round and round And here's one for Sauron: Remember Me by Hoobastank: Did you know me? Or were you too preoccupied With playing king in your small kingdom? And now the real world Has stripped you of your royalty And from your kingdom you're evicted That's all....for now. I assure you, I will be back!!!!! [ March 06, 2003: Message edited by: Sapphire_Flame ]

OH DEAR! You guys ROCK. I was just listening to Led Zepplin, and "Ramble On" sang from my CD player!
It was in the darkest depths of Mordor I met a girl so fair but Gollum at the evil wall crept up and slipped away with he-er, he-er,her-yea There aint a thing I can do I guess I'll just RAMBLE AWAY Oh my, Zepplin just ROCKS. There's also a song called "The Misty Mountain Hop" again by Zepplin. I remember first time I really listened to Ramble On - REALLY listened to it. I was driving home from work and trippin out when I heard the LOTR reference. I've had that LP since I was a kid, and when you open it, there's a picture of Gandalf on a cliff. It's crazy [ March 06, 2003: Message edited by: Pookabunny ]

For some 'odd reason' That song from Joseph always makes me think of Saruman...you know, the 'coat of many colors' song...And Hedwig's theme from Harry Potter reminds me of Frodo. And parts of Angel of Music remind me of Pippin for a stragne reason or other. And I made up a tune for that tom bombadil poem so obviously I think of that.

'Crawling' by Linkin Park reminds me of Frodo:
'crawling in my skin these wounds they will not heal fear is how I fall confusing what is real' The wounds are the wraith wound and the missing finger, the fear and confusion is the wraiths themselves. 'there's something inside me that pulls beneath the surface consuming/confusing this lack of self-control I fear is never ending controlling/I can't seem' The lack of self control is the ring's power. 'to find myself again my walls are closing in I've felt this way before so insecure discomfort, endlessly has pulled itself upon me distracting/reacting against my will I stand beside my own reflection it's haunting how I can't seem... to find myself again." When he stands in front of the mirror at Rivendell, he sees a younger version of himself but who's seen much more. There is more to the song, but it doesn't remind me much of LOTR after that.

Actually, also reminding me of LOTR are a couple Metallica songs. Parts of 'Sad But True' reminds me of the ring's power over Gollum:
Hey I'm your life I'm the one who takes you there Hey I'm your life I'm the one who cares They They betray I'm your only true friend now They They'll betray I'm forever there Hate I'm your hate I'm your hate when you want love Pay Pay the price Pay, for nothing's fair Hey I'm your life I'm the one who took you there Hey I'm your life And I no longer care 'Wherever I May Roam' reminds me vividly of Aragorn: ...And the road becomes my bride I have stripped of all but pride So in her I do confide And she keeps me satisfied Gives me all I need ...And with dust in throat I crave Only knowledge will I save To the game you stay a slave Rover wanderer Nomad vagabond Call me what you will But I'll take my time anywhere Free to speak my mind anywhere And I'll redefine anywhere Anywhere I may roam Where I lay my head is home ...And the earth becomes my throne I adapt to the unknown Under wandering stars I've grown By myself but not alone I ask no one One stanza of 'Of Wolf and Man' reminds me of orcs ravaging Rohan: Bright is the moon high in starlight Chill is the air cold as steel tonight We shift Call of the wild Fear in your eyes It's later than you realized They all remind me of LOTR everytime I hear them, but then, I seem to find links to Tolkien in everything that I do!

Good one, Feanor! Another one by Linkin Park that's good is Papercut. Seems Gollum-ish, I think...
Here's one by Hoobastank again, called Crawling in the Dark: I will dedicate And sacrifice my everything for just a second's worth Of how my story's ending And I wish I could know if the directions that I take And all the choices that I make won't end up all for nothing *Sounds like the thoughts of Aragorn and Frodo. Just wondering if they're doing the right things...* Show me what it's for Make me understand it I've been crawling in the dark looking for the answer Is there something more than what I've been handed? I've been crawling in the dark looking for the answer Help me carry on Assure me it's okay to use my heart and not my eyes To navigate the darkness *Darkness=Mordor. This is Frodo's bit; sounds like he's talking to Sam...* Will the ending be ever coming suddenly? Will I ever get to see the ending to my story? How much further do I have to go? And how much longer 'til I finally know? 'Cause I'm looking and I just can't see what's in front of me In front of me *nuff said...*

Sorry girls, but this one always reminds me of the Leggyboppers.
Stalker Girl- The Arrogant Worms When I joined a band I thought my life was pretty cool We'd stay in hotels with room service and pools Sign bodyparts for fans Check into rehab and smash up the van But looking back I should have stayed in school Life out on the road can be dangerous you see Truck stop food and smelly roadies are not nearly as scary As that girl who's at every show Mouthing the words from the front row The stalker girl is scaring the hell outta me She's my creepy stalker girl I'm the centre of her whacked-out, crazy and delusional world She follows me everywhere She's even got a bag with some bits of my hair Just go away you creepy stalker girl She says I touch her in a very special way But I'd never go near her out without my pepper spray And the voices inside her head Said break into my house and sleep in my bed And they also said that shaving the cat was okay She's my creepy stalker girl I'm the centre of her whacked-out, crazy and delusional world She follows me everywhere She's even got a bag with some bits of my hair Just go away you creepy stalker girl I've analyzed her handwriting And I've got some bad news You're manic obsessive with abandonment issues And you think that all our songs Are about you and you're usually wrong Except for now this song is so about you You creepy stalker girl You creepy stalker girl You creepy stalker girl

This is strange, but when I first read LotR, I was listening to a CD of Schubert's piano sonatas, and whenever I listen to that CD, I get this strange feeling of deja vu, and get this journeying feeling. It's really weird.

LOL!! That's kinda freaky. Next time I go to the theatre, I'm probably going to start singing that song when it gets to that scene. Anything Enya (Especially May it be, Aníron, and Pilgrim) and of course, Gollum's Song remind me of LOTR.
