The pitiful Sauron

How come Saurons armies did not have the same power and might of his master Morgoth?
Wouldn't he be able to conjure some new and terrible beast or spirit? He did use Nazgul and Mumakil but why not any Balrogs or Dragons by his side?

Because Sauron was a Maia. Morgoth was a Vala, one of the holy ones that were directly made by Eru. Morgoth had much more power, immesely more power that Sauron. Sauron would never, ever, reach the level of Morgoth's power.

Sauron was not pitiful, he was just doing what he could do, nothing more, nothing less.

Otherwise, there apparently were not any other balrogs left. There were no dragons left strong enough to make good soldiers - Smaug was wiped out by Gandalf's plan on purpose because he was the last dangerous dragon left.

Melkor was mightiest being ever to inhabit Arda. That's a big part of it - Sauron was but his 'apprentice.' Anything he did was only in vain attempt to replicate the original Dark Lord. However vast it was, I don't think Sauron's knowledge ever grasped all that Melkor knew.

Also, it's quite possible that some evil creatures (including balrogs *if* there had been any others left) defied Sauron and took him not as Morgoth's heir. They could disobey Sauron and still keep their allegiance to their original commander, Morgoth.

Myths Transformed:

Sauron is just another (if greater) agent. Orcs can rebel against him without losing their own irremedable allegiance to evil (Morgoth).
