Silmaril One or many?

Since all the publicity and the release of the first film there have been many new editions of The Lord Of The Rings. Some come in one big book, and some are split into either 3, 4, 5 or 6 books. My version is from long long long ago, and is all in one book, but it is quite posh and unpractical for every day reading, if you don't want to get it ruined. If any of you have got the versions where the books are divided, could you tell me if it is any easier, or does it just break up the flow of the story and confuse you. If it is better might get a new copy which is divided into several books.
