When I first read the book, I would never say that I trusted him. I was not extremely suspicious of him either. Rather, although he was obviously gaining trust with Frodo and although Tolkien was trying to make the reader trust him a bit, I felt that at any moment, at the slighest provocation, his good behavior could screech to a halt and he could plunge once again deep into Gollumity. It felt rather akin to watching a just-rehabilitated alcoholic go to a kegger with one friend keeping him away from the beverages and another putting him down and encouraging him to drink up.
