Shield Rabbits in Middle Earth?

I investigated the web page of "Encyclopedia of Arda" and that`s what I found:
Quote:
Rabbits

Species: Oryctolagus cuniculus
Other Names: Coneys

Long-eared, furry animals, also called 'coneys', that were as common in Middle-earth as they are today. A favourite dish of the Hobbits.
Funny, isnīt it? Well, anyone who can tell me about any appearance of rabbits in any of Tolkien`s books, please post, for I am confused!

Thanks
