Maiden of Tears

What made you love the books so much?
I'm really interested in what led so many people around the world to love Tolkien and his works so much. So i'd really like to hear your reasons and what you think is so special and different about his works.
I think my main reason is that Lord of The Rings is one of the only books i've ever read that never ceases to bring a tear to my eye, even at the happiest bits. I think if an author can manage to bring out so much emotion in you and immerse you in the book completely, it has to be one of my all time favourite books. I also get really intrigued by the mythology, i've just started the Silmarillion. What are your reasons?
